The Effect of Acoustic Love Songs

How one song got me writing this whole sappy tangent.

The Effect of Acoustic Love Songs

Do you ever just lay in bed listening to calming acoustic music and have the realization that maybe you’ve found the one? I know what you’re thinking. The one, what? But you know… the one. The person who every love song reminds you of. The person you want to snuggle with on a lazy day. The person who you want to make banana pancakes with on a Sunday morning while listening to "Banana Pancakes" by Jack Johnson. The person who you want to make gingerbread houses with, and take on adventures around New York. The person who you want to stand next to as you watch the fireworks go off in Disney World. The person who you want to write a poem about you. The person who you want to give you flowers for no reason. That person.

The person who you never saw being that person, and that’s exactly why they are. There was nothing forced about it. The person who came into your life, and was your best friend, not a potential boyfriend. The person who saw you at your worst and you didn’t care, because it was just them. Then one day they became more than that, and you became something together. But you didn’t have to change anything about yourself to be with them. Because they had already seen everything, and loved everything about you already.

They love your messy buns, and the messy fringe bangs hanging over your glasses. They love your oversized turtleneck sweaters and scuffed up Doc Martin boots. They love that you drink 5 cups of coffee every day, and that you never leave home without your camera. They love that you photograph every moment of your time together, even if they complain. They love that you are obsessed with Disney movies, even if you are in college. They even love that sometimes you dance around your apartment in an oversized tee-shirt and knee high socks as you make mac & cheese on your days off. But mostly, they love that they are the first person that you’ve allowed to love you.

In the past you have had such a hard time trusting people that at this point you were looking for someone to show you a reason to trust them. And they did. Time and time again they gave you a reason to keep them around, and they started becoming someone very important to you. They were the first person to make you a priority. They wanted to know how your day was, even if it resulted in a 10 minute rant about one silly thing. They were the person who made sure you always felt one hundred percent about yourself, because that’s how they saw you. The person who pulled you from your shell and made you start to see the positives in your life, and helped you let go of the negative people that used to surround you. They were the person who made you text them to let them know that you got home safe. They took an interest in your life, and they wanted to know everything about you. Not just the interesting and fun things, but also the harsh and dark things that you couldn’t tell anyone. They confided in you, and you two had a bond that you’d never experienced with someone else. You trusted them.

Now here you are, laying on your bed listening to "First Day Of My Life" by Bright Eyes and you can’t help but laugh because that’s exactly how you felt. Now that this person is in your life it’s like the first day of a new life. A better life, even though that sounds extremely cheesy. But it’s a life you want to be apart of. A life with a future that could go so many ways and you’d be ok with any of them. A life where you could marry your best friend. A life where you could even see yourself having kids and taking them on crazy adventures together. A life where you could sit together on the couch on a day off from work and just feel the sunlight come through the window. A life where they would hold your hand and tell you they love you, and somehow you could finally hear those words and believe them.

Do you ever have one of those days?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
