Working a fast food job for the past three years, most of my time is spent working the drive-thru. Being home from college for the summer, I work almost everyday, and everyday, at least 500 times a day, these are things I would like to tell people.
1. After deciding on the fast food restaurant you are about to eat at, if you have never been before and are unfamiliar with the menu, it may be in your best interest to go inside to order. Also, be mindful that the people waiting in line behind you are waiting on you to order. The longer you take, the more upset people get because of a long line in drive thru.
2. When you pull up to the speaker box to order, do not start ordering before someone greets you. There is a good chance that they are not listening so you are most likely going to have to repeat it again.
3. If you are going to order than more than 25 dollars worth of food, you should probably just go inside.
4. Do not drive off after you are finished talking. You probably forgot to say something or the order taker could not understand you, so your order will be wrong at the window.
5. Ordering more than one shake is a drive thru's worst nightmare! Please, please, please be mindful of how many shakes you are ordering. Making multiple shakes takes up quite a few minutes which gets the order taker or barista (drink maker for the drive-thru) behind which results in an awful train wreck of congestion throughout the drive-thru.
6. Do not take out your anger on the person working the window in drive-thru. Their job is to take your money and hand you your food and drinks. If your food is not ready, that is completely out of their hands. If we have discontinued your favorite menu item... It was not that person's choice.
7. Say thank you, it is incredibly rude not to.
8. Gift cards are also something that should not be bought through the drive-thru.
9. If you are with your friends, stop talking, focus, and order your food. We aren't getting paid to sit there and listen to you giggle for 10 minutes.
10. To the people talking on the cell phone, hang it up or tell them to hang on. If you decide to tell them to hang on, you need to pause the conversation for both the speaker box where you order and at the window where you give your money and receive your food.
11. Don't "shush" or interrupt someone if they are repeating your order back to you. You want the right food, don't you? We are just double checking!
Working the fast food life is hard most of the time. I hope some of you have learned from this and that my work life may become a little easier! (It probably won't, but a girl can dream.)
