The DL Of Drunk Driving

I bet they don't know, but you do.

She has a scar on her right temple.

She doesn't know where it came from, but I do.

It was the night we were at the hospital running up and down the halls to find her aunt. Young and naive, we had no idea what was happening. When we finally found the room, it was too late. It was difficult to understand how she passed so fast. She beat her head against the wall in agony. Blood poured down her face, but it never hit her as much as it hit me. I saw her at her weakest point and that was the night I realized I loved her.

She sniffles quite a lot in the morning.

She doesn't know why, but I do.

When she was 22, her nasal cavity erupted on a cold December morning and she was whisked away for emergency surgery. I think it was because she used Afrin just a little too much. She hated her allergies. When she woke up she was so scared she'd never be able to smell anything again. I went and bought her roses at 4:54 am so she could smell them. In that moment I knew I'd be buying her roses for the rest of my life.

She has a million photos of a guy and a girl on her phone doing silly things.

She doesn't know why, but I do.

They are pictures of us throughout the years. We started dating at 19. We are now 31. Unlike high school sweethearts, we were college sweethearts. She was the light of my life, and she still is even if she doesn't understand why.

She lays in a hospital bed unable to move.

She doesn't know why, but I do.

On July 5th, at 1:20 in the morning we were on our way home from an annual fourth party. We were beyond wasted and yet I felt like it was okay for me to drive. I was speeding a little too much to feel the wind in my hair and to see the freedom in her eyes. She thought it was fun, and it was until we hit a ditch at 200 mph and flipped so many times that we lost count. It was in that moment I realized no amount of alcohol is worth risking your life for. Especially if a person who's as innocent as she was is sitting in a seat right next to you.

I was left with nothing but a broken shoulder and a shattered heart. She was a different story . She suffered multiple breaks in multiple bones throughout her entire body. One small fracture in her spine has left her paralyzed. Just one. It isn't even the size of a hair.

Her head went through the windshield before everything else did with such an impact that to this day she doesn't know who she is.

She doesn't know why God has done this to her.

She doesn't know why she doesn't have kids.

She doesn't know why there's a wedding band on her left hand.

She doesn't know much of anything.

Mostly she doesn't know why I tell her I'm sorry each and every day and express just how much I honestly love her. It's all my fault.

She may never know, but I do.

Drunk Driving Kills... Don't be stupid. Call a friend. Find an Uber. Admit to your faults and move forward. Don't risk another persons life along with your own. It's definitely not worth it. This is based on a true story. Don't let yourself in up in a similar situation. They may never know, but you will...

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
