The Distraction Game

America is getting confused about what is actually important.

I'm worried about America. I'm worried that we are getting distracted from the real issues that are facing us. This fall on the Mizzou campus, protesters forced their president to resign. Whether he should or shouldn't have is really not the point of this. During some protests, students set up "safe spaces" that were to be free of the media and people with opposing viewpoints.

Uh, I don't really think that's how the First Amendment works. Denying racism still exists today would be dumb, and protesting against it on a college campus is a good thing. That's what the focus should be on. It should be set on fixing the underlying problem. It should not be about shutting down opposing viewpoints and denying media the right to do their job. The First Amendment goes both ways.

Recently, at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, a student government member was asked to resign after she made chalk drawings on campus in support of Donald Trump. Now, I disagree with Trump on almost every single issue, but again, that's not how the First Amendment works. The United States Constitution applies to all points of view. Going away to college should be a time to hear different opinions, not a time to shut anything down that disagrees with you.

The media plays a terrible role in encouraging this distraction. They refuse to cover the issues but instead focus on what bad word Trump said this week. Really? That's what we're going to go after Donald Trump for? Of all the things he has said, probably the least important is his use of profanity. Instead of covering the fact that he uses words that nearly every American also uses, how about we cover some of his stances on policy such as when he advocated for bombing innocent civilians on purpose?

We get caught up in a lot of things that really don't matter. Donald Trump might actually be right when he says America is too "politically correct." That is one thing I do like about him. Unfortunately, most of the time, his problem isn't with being politically correct — it's with being correct in general. Most people do not like politics because it has turned into a soap opera in which the media baits people into attacking their opponent. America is a cool country because everyone gets to have opinions and we should never engage in shutting those opinions down. If we stopped worrying about petty stuff and started focusing on the issues that matter, then we would have a much more vibrant democracy. But until then, I'll continue to worry.

eye roll

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"

While this question trend can get annoying, there are a couple of pros to having RBF.

Yify

Another day, another Elle Woods comment. Can’t us blondes get through the day without someone harping at us over the typical stereotypes about who we are? I never understood why a person was judged based upon the hair color they were born with, or the hair color they choose to have (unless you dye your hair blue like Kylie Jenner, I’m still trying to understand why that’s a trend). Nevertheless, as it should be assumed, not everyone is the same. Not all blondes like bright colors and Lilly Pulitzer, and not all blondes claim to identify with Marilyn Monroe. I think the best suggestion to give to people before they make such radical claims is to stop judging a book by its cover. Or in this case, stop judging a blonde by her hair color.

15 Things That Happen On Your Birthday

Do you have a small get-together or throw a big bash?

My birthday has never been my favorite holiday. I've found that I'm more excited to celebrate my friends' and family members' birthdays more than my own. I don't like being the center of attention, so I usually celebrate over dinner with a small group of family and friends. This way, I can enjoy myself naturally without feeling like I have to entertain everyone and make sure they are satisfied. In the past when I've had large parties, I was so nervous that people weren't perfectly content that I didn't enjoy myself at my own celebration.
