We call Thanksgiving "Turkey Day" but there's food involved that is just so much better than turkey. We say it's a family day, but we know we're all just here for the food (and maybe a little bit of family too). The mix of sweet and savory home cooked meals that fills your Thanksgiving plate, and ultimately causes that 3 day long food coma is the best part of the food-centered holiday that brings us all together. Here's the definitive ranking of everything on the table that is just that much better than just the turkey.
Cornbread
We came to America and the native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn. That's how the Thanksgiving story goes right? Well we, as Americans, became super crafty and innovative and turned this grown food into delicious bread. It's so sweet, yet just savory enough to be dinner food. Brilliant.
Stuffing
Only on Thanksgiving can you get away with eating something that cooked inside of a turkey. Pretty weird, but always so, so good. Whether sweet or spicy, stuffing is always the perfect complement for your thanksgiving plate.
Sweet potato/marshmallow soufflé
Don't even get me started. I count down the days to Thanksgiving for this specific dish. There is nothing better than warm, toasted sweet marshmallows melted on top of mashed sweet potatoes. Try to find another side dish that tastes like dessert, but is still allowed to be a side dish. I dare you.
Cranberry sauce
I don't think anything compliments turkey better than this does, that's all I have to say about it. You can't just eat turkey alone when this is on the table.
Mashed potatoes and gravy
They go together like cereal and milk, peanut butter and jelly, and apple pie and America. Mashed potatoes and gravy is the ultimate comfort food, and we are so lucky to get a holiday where we can just pile our plates with it. There is nothing like the perfect amount of gravy on top of buttery mashed potatoes, and nothing better than going back for a second (or third) serving.
Pumpkin pie
It came way before the pumpkin spice latte, yet is still pretty underrated, in my mind. Pumpkin pie is a thanksgiving classic, tastes exactly like autumn in a pie, and is the perfect way to finish off your thanksgiving meal.
