“Karen, please. It’s unthinkable” John said, not breaking eye contact.
“Do we have any other choice? What else can we do?” Karen tried to turn away from John. The heartbreak in his eyes was too much for her to handle.
John grabbed his wife’s hand. “Give me a little more time, please. I swear I can get the money.”
“We are out of time and you know it. We can’t hold onto this property any longer. We simply cannot afford it to keep it.”
“But we have nothing left. Not even a hotel to fall back on. How could we ever come back from this?”
Karen pulled away from John’s hands. “We just have to hope we get some luck here soon. It’s the only thing we can do.”
“Let me go to the bank and see what I can work out. Please.”
“It’s too late and that’s only going to put us further behind. We already owe them so much.”
“Just let me try to get the money, Karen. You have to let me try one more time.”
“You almost ended up in jail last time, John. We can’t go through that again.”
John sat back in his chair. “I bought this property and I refuse to give it away”.
“If we had the luck we had when we started, things would be different. But we are on our last dollar here and we have to do this. I’m sorry, John, but it’s time to give this place up. We have to play with the cards we have been given and unfortunately, this is the hand we were dealt. We’re in this together, John. Through thick and thin, we promised we would always be there for each other. We can get through this, I know we can.” A long pause followed. Never did John think it would come to this. The thought of him and his wife ever being in this position was completely unheard of to him. Deep down, however, it was clear there was no other option. John knew his wife was making the best possible move. He couldn’t justify it to himself any longer. It was time to sell.
“Fine.” John sat forward in his chair. “Alright Tim, you can buy Boardwalk from us.”
“Awesome! I’ve never been this good at this game.” Tim and his wife high-fived.
John let out a sigh. “God, I hate monopoly.”
