The Debate Between Good And Bad Cops

Believe it or not, but not every cop is the 'bad guy'.

Social media is a way where people are allowed to voice their opinions on current events, but the one issue I have repeatedly come across is this 'all cops are bad' concept. Every time I see anything involving this view, I immediately cringe. What are you even basing your opinion of police officers off of? The fact that you got a speeding ticket for breaking the law? The way that the media portrays current situations within the United States involving police officers and what they do on the job? What I want to set straight is why you saying that every cop is the same and the idea that they only do bad things in our society is WRONG.

Everyone has their own views, including those in law enforcement.

I'm not going to sit here and say that all cops are just following the law and what they're told to do, because that's neither accurate nor realistic at all. We as people grow up with different views on others, the society that surrounds us, and how we are supposed to respond to situations in life. With this in mind, when we become adults and go into our profession, what we are taught and what we learn growing up WILL affect what choices we make in our careers regardless of what kind of position or job we hold. Just this alone should be proof that yes, not all cops have the same mindset and not all of them are going to handle situations in the correct matter, but this also shows that not all members of law enforcement are bad and only doing things in their profession for themselves.

Your labels affect EVERYONE IN SOCIETY.

I'm going to go out and say this: you saying the phrase "All cops are racist" is the exact same thing as you saying that police officers believe that "All black people break the law". These labels are just two of many examples that are completely inaccurate but thrown around way too much. These labels that you are sticking on others is the prime reason why communities and law enforcement do not get along. It is a proven fact that when you believe in something, any event that relates to it is going to strengthen that belief. End the labels, and the more you will begin to notice that your thoughts that all cops are the same and corrupted is a complete false accusation.

What needs to happen is a joint effort between police officers and communities to work together to make their area a safer environment. In the end, the job of a police officer, believe it or not, is to help the community and make sure that people stay safe. They cannot do this, however, unless everyone puts in an effort to stop blaming the police for everything and look at the greater picture of it all. So the next time you say that a cop is a 'pig' or a 'racist crook' why don't you ask yourself why you believe this. Because unless you have a valid example of how every single officer is this or that, at least in my eyes, you are wrong.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
