A Verdict On The Death Penalty

Right or Wrong?

A Verdict On The Death Penalty
Huffington Post

Recently I started binge watching Prison Break on Netflix. I highly recommend this series and since I find it addicting I won't give away any spoilers, but I will say one of the main characters is a death row inmate. I don't know about other people, but the death penalty is not something I think about too often, unless it's brought up in a class discussion or something of that nature. Naturally, while watching an episode with a roommate, the topic of whether the death penalty is right or wrong came up. Especially with the sentencing to death row for Charleston church shooter, Dylann Roof, being released just in the past two weeks,it got me thinking.

So I pose the question, is the death penalty right or wrong? Let me give you some data. According to the NY Times, it costs an average of $31,286 per year, per inmate in most states. That number is even higher in some places, like in the state of New York where is costs nearly $60,000 per year, per inmate. That is a staggering number. As a taxpaying citizen, that astounds me that our money is paying for criminals to sit in jail. So knowing it costs so much for one inmate, imagine the costs for a single prison in one state that has hundreds of inmates. That is millions of dollars per year spent on criminals. That is a disgusting number. But with the death penalty given as a sentence, this eliminates some of these criminals and therefore this cost, right

On the other hand here's another statistic: an article from the Huffington Post revealed a research study that showed from 1973 to 2004, there were a total of 7,482 defendants who were sentenced to death. Of those 7,482, 117 or 1.6% of those convicts were exonerated for their crime and more investigating proved that at least 4.1% of those given the death penalty were actually innocent. So with that in mind, should the death penalty be given when there's even the slightest chance the defendant is wrongly convicted? This adds to the possibly of taking the life of an innocent being. So this brings up the question of whether the death penalty is a good idea simply because it takes away the cost?

Looking at this from a Christian point of view, I have to ask myself, "Do we as humans have the right to take someone's life, even if they have committed a heinous crime?" Or, "Is taking someone's life because they took someone else's a good way to show that murder is wrong?" There are many questions to be asked when formulating an opinion on whether the death penalty is right or wrong. Do we leave these convicts in prison and cost tax payers tens of thousands of dollars for one inmate to live for a year? Or do we take the life of a potentially innocent person? Do we execute and bring closure to a victim's family?

I don't think a single conclusion will ever be reached. Like with most things these days, someone, somewhere is always going to be upset or offended by whatever an individual decides. So, I encourage you to take a moment to think about this, maybe it's something you've never thought about, maybe it's something you've discussed pretty in depth. But take a minute and formulate your own opinion and see where you stand on one of the most controversial topics out there.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
