The Death Of Patriotism

In a nation so divided, we do not realize that the very thing that can hold us together is what is being destroyed in this pseudo-civil war.

Let us take a look back into the 40s and 50s. There was never a day that passed by that the American citizen did not value those who fought the good fight in every single war that we have been involved in thus far. It is truly a magnificent sight, and one that is truly something to behold. Now let us take a step back and look at modern day America. Ask anyone around you what they think about the military, and what they think about veterans. The answers they give you will absolutely shock you as they are completely contrasted from the views in the mid-1900s.

People will say that those who go into the military are not smart enough to get into college. They think all of them are ruthless baby killers, and they think they should not be helped with things like military discounts. It is absolutely sickening that we have men and women dying for their country, only to see that their country views them as swines that are not worthy of the honor they actually do deserve. It truly seems like patriotism is a dying fashion in this great nation. It doesn’t even stop at the simple act of not acknowledging our guys and gals in uniform. Sadly, it is much deeper than that.

Patriotism is just generally dying. It used to be such an honorable act to laud your own country and hold it in the highest regard. Nowadays it is the polar opposite, and it is truly a travesty. We think hating the United States is the way to go. For every 20 great things this country does, we only pay attention to one bad thing. People think that only the U.S does absurd things, but they obviously don’t pay attention to world politics. Other countries are doing things that are as crazy, if not crazier.

I don’t think people realize how marvelous this country is; We are literally the powerhouse of the world. There is a reason that we say when the U.S sneezes, the whole world catches a cold—we control everything. We are the police of the world. When a nation faces terrorism, they call us. They don’t call France or Britain. They call the United States of America. Just writing about how amazing this country is fills me with patriotic pride. It is the absolute best feeling in the world to have so much pride in your nation. Knowing your country is the strongest superpower this world has ever seen is incredible. Knowing the history of what this country stands for is the only thing that saddens me, because I know I will never be able to fill the ranks of such greats like George Washington, Dwight D. Eisenhower and the like. My generation rarely produces such heroes anymore. Wimps are a dime a dozen.

Instead of loathing this great nation, people should be proud of it. Be prideful in how young this country is, yet how stark it is, especially in the face of adversity. Be proud that you get to be a cog in this great machine that is the United States of America.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
