It's here, the Coronavirus makes its landing at ASU

The news notification came suddenly.

Last Sunday, The Arizona Department of Health Services and Maricopa County Department confirmed that an Arizona State University student has been diagnosed with a case of the Novel Coronavirus.

The student had recently traveled to Wuhan, China. He does not live on campus and is currently in isolation. Officials say his symptoms are mild, however, ASU students across all campuses are worried about their health and some are wearing masks every day.

ASU faculty also sent out a mass email informing students of the precautions they should take and how they can protect themselves from any disease. The school did not, however, cancel classes despite many students advocating for the cause.

ASU students have created a petition for ASU to cancel classes and clear the air of the virus. The petition has already reached over 21,500 signatures out of 25,000. Students are also demanding more information on where the diagnosed student is, how old he is, and in what grade level. ASU has decided to not share this information with students because they deem it "unnecessary" to what actually matters.

Dr. Cara Christ, director of the Arizona Department of Health Services, says that investigators are looking to see who had close contact with the diagnosed student and if they exhibit any of the same symptoms. According to Christ, symptoms of the Coronavirus are similar to the flu and she advises people to take any symptoms seriously.

Symptoms could include:

- Coughing

- Fever

- Runny nose

- Difficulty breathing

Jessica Rigler, assistant director of public health preparedness for the Arizona Department of Health Services, says that the United States will most likely see more cases of the Coronavirus. She also says, however, the risk to the public is currently low.

The most anyone can do right now is wash their hands frequently, be aware of any symptoms similar to the flu, taking caution when riding public transportation, and being aware of their surroundings. The virus spreads through the air so a cough is not "just a cough" anymore.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
