“the last pure, unadulterated moments in the genre.” - Questlove
As a music enthusiast and hip hop geek, my worstexperience with the fear of missing out happened when I wasn't even born yet. Although I have witnessedKanye and 50 both go head to head with the release of their albums in '07, nothing compares to the iconicmomentthat occurred at the nexus of the first (1986-1993) and second golden ages of hip hop (1994-1999).
On November 9, 1993, two unique hip hop masterpieces were released - The Wu-Tang Clan's "Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers" and A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight Marauders." The day Tribe encouraged everyone to relax was the same day Wu brought the ruckus. The day Tribe encouraged everyone to relax was the same day Wu brought the ruckus. The jazzy, laid-back sound from Tribe was matched by the Clan's bass-heavy,hardcore lyrics.
Although November 9th marked the end of the first golden age of hip-hop and ATCQ's trilogy of albums ( 1990's People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, 1991's The Low End Theory, and 1993 Midnight Marauders), it also allowed Wu Tang to emerge onto the hip hop sceneand shake the industry with their Shaolin-infused raps. Still, 23 years later, both groups are considered by hip-hop fans to be two of the greatest rap groups ever.
Make sure you check out A Tribe Called Quest's upcoming album, We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, which is due November 11th.
