June 12, 2016 is a day that all theater buffs and actors alike, come together to commemorate and cherish the past year's musicals, plays, and the talented individuals who brought them to life. Myself, being a "drama kid" at heart, got together with my fellow thespians for a night of ballon popping, voting, debating, and celebrating.
If James Corden's humor and ability to bring every musical to life in under 8 minutes is not enough to turn on your TV sets, then maybe the fact that it's the Tony Awards 70th year anniversary spectacular (and we all know they bring out the big guns). But just to name a few, the most talked about musical, "Hamilton," which had 16 Tony nominations, "The Color Purple," "Fiddler on the Roof," "Spring Awakening," and "She Loves Me," were all revived and performed at the event.
For those non theatre lovers, or people who decided to do something better on their Sunday Night, I am here to bring you back in the loop. To start off the show, Corden said the night would be given in remembrance to all of the past weeks tragedies. The cast of "Hamilton" tweaked their opening song, "Alexander Hamilton" in order to introduce the host, James Corden. He later sang about Sunday night being his night to be a jack of all trades and take on any leading role that came his way. While his song and dance was playing in the background, I got together my voting ballot of over 29 categories and 128 nominations and had a hard time choosing who I thought the winners should be. A cherry on the cake for me was seeing Steve Martin ("Bright Star") and Sara Bareilles ("Waitress") take a break from there respective art fields, to create and bring back to life musicals that are relatable, touching, and fun. Their music and lyrics were both nominated for the Best Original Score category, but the ever brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda took the win for his score in his musical, "Hamilton."
Now I know the love towards "Hamilton" is a bit gray-- we have the die hard lovers and then we have the originals, who believe it to be too mainstream.
My opinion: I have valued Lin-Manuel Miranda's work and creativity ever since he came out as an underdog, with his music and lyrics, as well as acting performance, in "In the Heights." The music is vibrant, the story is telling and moving, and as a Hispanic myself, it is relatable beyond words. As for "Hamilton" as its own work, I believe the musical is solid and for any history buff, it's enjoyable and accurate. (Work!) It reminds individuals that history remembers itself. If you are not down to listen to rap for a straight two and a half hours, then this is definitely not the musical for you.
Now to explore the other musicals. "The Color Purple" musical's leading lady, who also took the win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Musical (Cynthia Erivo), delivered a breath taking performance that drove the entire Tony community to a standing ovation.
Plays that featured up and coming actresses such as, Lupita Nyong'o ("Eclipsed"), Saoirse Ronan ("The Crucible"), and Jessica Lange (Winner, "Long Day's Journey into Night"),were especially noted for their intense acting and connection to characters.
Overall, the 70th Tony Awards was a huge success. The winners were well deserved and fit, the performances were superb and magical, and the losers, well we are sorry (till next time!) As the cast of "Hamilton" says, "Look around, look around, how lucky we are to be alive right now."
To be able to watch the Tony's and bask in the 2015-2016 season's glory, yeah, I would say we are pretty lucky.
