AM 970 The Answer

As Halloween came and went, all that one could see on their feeds is how not to dress as a Native American. The protest of Native American costumes was ever present this year, but what wasn’t present in the media was the Dakota Pipeline and the Standing Rock tribe’s fight to stop the crude oil pipeline from cutting through their reservation, contaminating their water, and desecrating scared land.

According to some of the first accounts of the protest, the issue has been going on since April of this year, but is only starting to be reported on major news sites. The first accounts of it surfaces after Divergent star Shailene Woodley was arrested after allegedly trespassing during a protest. Since then, almost 141 Native American and protesters have been arrested.

The construction of the pipeline seems to forgo any regard for the Native Standing Rock tribe, even though the pipeline would run through their reservation. Protesters are angry with the mistreatment of native land and with the fact the pipeline could contaminate the ground water, which is a water source to many Native peoples.

North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple has activated 100 National Guard members after clashes between Police and protesters continue. The clashes haven’t stopped the protesters who gather at the reservation. The protest has become one of “the largest gathering of Native Americans in more than 100 years,” as reported by BBC.

The violence of the protest has only grown, many peaceful protests have been met with riot-tactics, such as mace, dogs, and mass arrests. The distain for the tactics have reached Twitter in the trending hashtag #NoDAPL. The North Dakota police force was told to take steps to remove protesters from what is claimed as private property.

Bernie Sander's has spoken out about the protests, asking President Obama to step up and help stop the pipeline. The President has not spoken out about his position, but has been known for his fight against the Keystone Pipeline back in 2015.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. "College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
