I had been swimming competitively since I was five years old and was always prepared to take it to the next level in college. I became part of a Division-1 team for two years and it was an experience I will forever be appreciative of. I fully understand the struggles a college athlete goes through. Between grueling practices, early mornings and dragged out study hours, they aim to give 100% in every aspect of their life. The physical success of a sport may always be there, but I found that achievement comes from having a good mentality through all of the endeavors that have to be overcome daily.
1. Being a student athlete is a full time job plus more.
Some days it can be hard to just stay awake.
2. Most college athletes don’t live a lifestyle like the rich and famous.
Yes, free gear is just about the only big perk, so let them have their moment when they have to show up to take the same test you do.
3. Skipping class isn't an option.
Advisors and coaches keep tabs on athletes to not only attend class, but to also participate.4. E
4. Early morning walks to practice are the worst, especially when the snow plow hasn't come through yet.
Gotta love the 4:30AM wake up calls during the middle of winter.
5. Your team becomes your second family.
No one understands you and your struggles more than your fellow teammates.
6. Most weekends are booked.
Athletes find themselves wondering if they will ever have a social life again.
7. College athletes are pros at time management
And when a future employer points out that skill on a resume, it's all worth it all of a sudden.
8. The excitement is too real when athletes can go out on a Saturday night.
9. There's no such thing as a day off.
But when there is the occasional lazy Sunday to relax, everything hurts.
10. Lastly, what athlete ever actually feels full?
"I'll take one of everything please!"
When all is said and done, the experience as a student-athlete can be an amazing one, full of triumphs and success. Most would agree that although being a student and an athlete in college can get quite tedious, it is without doubt, a rewarding experience to say the least.
