The "Dad" Friend

We have a "mom" friend, why wouldn't we have a "dad" friend?

We always talk about how friend groups that have the friend that's the "mom," but never a friend that's the "dad." For me, I've been blessed with several people that fall under the "dad" friend category. They are both males and females and are a big part of my life. Here are some of the qualities that the "dad" friend will have.

1. They always make sure you get home safely.

My "dad" friends will always make sure my roommates and I get home, with feeding us pizza, after a night out. Somehow, they are always there to make sure we are where we need to be, even if they have to help us break into our own place after locking ourselves out.

2. They give you the right amount of help.

They won't take the role of the "mom" of holding your hair back while you puke, but they will definitely be there with a slice of pizza and a glass of water when you're done. They won't suffocate you with what you shouldn't be doing and maybe encourage you to do something that you shouldn't be doing.

3. They always protect you from those creepy dudes at parties.

They can see how much that one guy is annoying you at a party and somehow, they are able to get you back without it being too obvious. They are your protector, just like how your real dad would protect you.

4. They tell you how it really is.

The "dad" friend is not afraid to tell you what you really need to hear. It can range from "you really need to take classes seriously" to "that person sucks why are you still dealing with it?" Somehow they seem to know more than you do even though you're the same age. It's like they have lived longer and experienced more than you have. The "dad" friend will always have your back, but will make you realize what you really need to do.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
