The Cubs win the World Series
It's official, the streak is over. After 108 years of not being able to win the World Series, the Cubs do it. They win, arguably, the greatest game in World Series history 8-7 in 10 innings. I have to confess that I was rooting for the Indians, but the Cubs deserved to win. I only wanted Cleveland to win because the Cavs won the finals and I wanted this year to be the year for Cleveland sports. Either way, it was a great series to finish off the baseball season. Here is a list of all things that have happened in those 108 years.
The significance is because it has literally been forever since the Cubs last won the title. A little background on the curse goes like this, according to what I have been told. There was a goat owner who wanted to bring his goat to the Cubs game back in the middle 1900s. When he approached the gate security told him he could not bring his goat into the stadium which made the owner very mad. After this incident, the Cubs had so much bad luck that it was all put on the goat and was called the “Curse of the Billy Goat”.
The last time the Cubs won the title was in 1908, which is why people say the 108 year streak is over. They have gone to the World Series in other years during the curse, but have never won. Their last appearance was back in 1945 during World War II. Within the years of 1908-2016, the Cubs have gone to 8 World Series and won 1. During the same span including the World Series appearances, they have gone to make the playoffs 15 times.
Their opponents, the Cleveland Indians, have not won the World Series since 1948. The city of Cleveland has not won a title in any pro sports since the Cleveland Browns did in 1964. That streak, much like the Cubs streak, ended when the Cavaliers won the NBA Finals this past June 2016 as well. The Cubs winning the title was so significant because they had to wait so long for a title. Like all sports fans, they want to see their teams win. Sometimes it takes a while, other teams just have to wait a few years (cough Yankees cough). But, if you take the Yankees 27 titles, and spread them out, that is literally one title every 5 years. I can’t hate on the Yankees because my parents are, but I am just saying.
