For the last year, or so, the media has bombarded the minds of the American people with Trump vs. Hillary and their supposed political platforms. We have been drowned to such an extensive point that when I walk into a room with the news playing, I have to walk out. Both, my ears and mind cannot take anymore of this nonsense. This ongoing political event can be compared to two children fighting: "you hit me" "no I didn't", "you're ugly" "no you are". The mere thought that one of these candidates will be the leader of my country and affect my future makes me shiver.
The United States claims to be one of the best countries in the world, yet we can't come to a compromise when it comes to politics. Our political leaders put themselves on two different sides of the ideological spectrum and stay there. The ending result of this resistance to change leads to a divided country where only one half of the citizens are represented. Why are our candidates so stubborn to compromise? Don't they want what is best for their people?
Our candidates are stuck in their ways and have no reason to compromise due to our two political party system. Due to this system, smaller parties never get the chance to win an election, and this can lead to people compromising some of their beliefs so they are able to align with a party. Due to a split government, when the legislature and executive branches are of different ideologies, there is no need to compromise because the President and Congress will vote in their own separate directions and land in a gridlock. If we were to take an SMDPV, single member district plurality vote, stance in the United States then many more people would be represented in our government.
We would be much more Democratic because people of different ideologies would be equally represented in government. Members of Congress would have to reach compromises for certain acts and laws to be passed and there would be better representation in government. If the United States wants to reach the perfect Democracy we always say we strive for, we must begin by working together politically. We must reach agreements that benefit a majority of our citizens, instead of a plurality.
