The Complications Of Social Media

We love that it's evil.

The Complications Of Social Media

Our society revolves around social media, and I am confident in saying that we are all too dependent on it. I believe that social media has the right intentions, but we have corrupted it. Therefore, it is currently evil because of the way we abuse its system. Without social media, we wouldn’t compare ourselves to others as much, people wouldn’t get cyberbullied, there would be less petty drama, people would be less fake, and honestly less creepy. When you think about it, social media is creepy. You can find random people on explore pages and learn about their life and even send them a message. It’s kind of stalker-ish… So why are we so obsessed with it?

Society has instilled in our minds that we need to know every detail about everyone’s life like it’s actually our business and like we are actually supposed to care. Snapchat is possibly the most useless form of social media, yet somehow we are so amused by it. Why do we feel the need to post selfies on our Snapchat stories for 3 seconds? Or a picture of food we love with hearts around it? I could care less about what you put in your stomach! But the question still remains: why are we so obsessed with it?

I think it all comes down to this: we are selfish. Naturally, humans are selfish beings. We want it to be about us. We want attention. We want compliments. We want to be envied. Why else would we post selfies? Or pictures of new additions to jacked up trucks? Or the latest vacation we went on? Or that 6 a.m. run we went on? Social media is so self-centered. Sure we can post the typical “appreciation post” or “man candy Mondays” but you’re still bragging about how awesome your life is because you have these great people in it.

We are constantly trying to keep up the newest caption trend, poses, and filters. That’s not us. If we are constantly trying to pose our lives just to post a picture so our followers can see, then how will we ever learn to act natural? We’re not ourselves when we try too hard to be perfect.

Honestly, I am embarrassed of how far I have gotten sucked into social media. I am guilty of all the things mentioned above, but yet I continue to use social media. If you’re reading this article, then you more than likely found it on Facebook. Thankfully, I can share this article through Facebook and express my opinion. I am thankful for that! I can also post pictures for family and friends, who are interested, to see what goes on in my life now. Social media does have a lot of potential, but there’s also so much negativity floating around. It’s not like I have a solution for the problem or that I think social media is completely evil. It can be very beneficial, but damaging at the same time.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
