Dealing with mental illness in high school, college, and real life isn't something that is talked about much. About 1/3 of adults with depression are actually getting help for it. To give you a more broad number, if there are 10,000 people, only 3,500 are being seen. It's scary to think that we have this stigma about suicide, or about depression, that makes it hard to talk about. If you don't know how to feel then maybe we should talk about it. If you're feeling sick and having one of those days where you feel mentally bed ridden--when you still need to get up to go to a job or class--then take the time to do a few things to clear your head.
1. Read:
Reading can calm you down and help you escape. It can take you out of your head by giving you something else to think about.
2. Music
There have been studies concluding that music helps your mood and effects how you feel.
3. Bathing
Taking a bath can relax your muscles. In turn, relaxing you.
4. Exercise:
Exercise helps control your breathing and can give you a feeling of escape.
5. Indulging:
Indulging in what could be your favorite TV show or favorite food could have the potential to make you feel better.
6. Travel:
Going away for a while to some place nice, or even going for a walk, can do wonders.
These are just a few of the things you can do. They don't have to be a big. Sometimes the smallest things are the ones that set us off and sometimes they're also the one that help us stay in the wavelength of what happiness should be. I believe that everyone deserves happiness and that if you want it, you have to fight for it. Everyone goes through struggles, whenever you feel bad about failing that test you took or about not getting that new car you wanted, just know that it's not the end of the world. You will have more chances with material things. We were made to make mistakes and to learn from them. If you know you're feeling sick mentally, getting help is always the first step to getting better. It doesn't matter if it's telling a loved one or talking about it to a counselor.
Someone once told me, "A day above ground is always a good day." Cheesy, but the words are imprinted in my mind for what may be forever. If you ever need someone to just talk to help is out there and you're not alone. Just remember someone out there loves you and wouldn't be the same without you.
