They tell you after high school that you need to have your major decided, your university needs to be waiting for you and your bags packed by the end of the summer. That's all great advice for someone who has their future figured out, but what about the ones of us who don't? Why should we feel less important or less "put together" than those who do?
Figuring out what we want to do for the rest of our lives is not easy. You may ask your friends, "Why are you going to school to be a big shot lawyer?" and their response is either "It's what I see myself loving to do" and then there's the answer of "The salary is six figures". If your answer is the first one, congratulations to you for finding a career you would love, and I wish you the very best! If your answer is the second, then I am so sorry for you. None of us should be choosing something to be our profession because of the money.
"Money rules the world" though, right? Sure, that's a way to look at things; although, are you going to want to wake up every day to get ready for a job to absolutely dread every morning/evening? Are you going to want to be paying back college loans (if applicable to you) for years to come just to do something you hate? This is why some of us aren't sure what we want to do after high school; we simply haven't found what we see ourselves waking up loving every day. This is why some of us don't have it all figured out and so many people don’t realize that not having it all figured out for the right reasons is OK.
It's OK to stay in your hometown after high school.
It's OK to go to your community college and strive for your generals.
It's OK to not have your college's logo on shirts and hoodies in sports stores to buy.
It's OK to not have a dorm buddy.
It's OK to use every day after high school in the real world to find out what you enjoy.
It's OK to find yourself first.
Find what you love and find yourself and before you know it, you’ll have it all figured out. It doesn't make you any less "put together" than your friend who is partying it up at a huge university with her law studies major. Kudos to those who have it figured out and kudos to those who are striving to get there.
Everyone moves at their own pace in life and once again, that's OK!
