Now, I've heard having a job and going to college full time was hard but wow. Experiencing it is something completely different. So here is a praise to all of the wonderful students out there who also put in 20+ hours at work, because man is it making me tired!
At first, I didn't know what I was getting myself into but like many other college students the student loans debt was beginning to accumulate in my own name and I didn't like the sound of that. So, I decided to return to my home base at Starbucks and rejoin their team as a barista. In high school, I would work around 20 hours a week and it was difficult but absolutely manageable. How wrong was I to try and compare high school to college, yet again.
To say that I'm tired is an understatement, because when I get finished dealing with all the customers at work on an 8 hour work day... I'm faced with a pile of homework on my desk as I return to my room. What a life, am I right? But to say that it's completely miserable is wrong! I have met so many amazing people at my new Starbucks already and having this job is making me appreciate all that my parents do! I can only imagine going to work and then coming home to be faced with your children's problems!
I am also thankful for my job and for being a full time student at school because it has taught me so many things already! For instance, procrastination is NOT an option. How fun would it be if you had an entire project waiting for you at midnight when you returned from work? Nope. I've learned to manage my time so much better than I could ever imagine. I've also learned that sleeping and eating right are necessities in order to be a pleasant person. If I don't sleep at least 7 hours and get a good meal in my stomach, I'm a grouch! No one wants to deal with that in their lives.
So here is a shout out to all the other college kids who are working their way through school. It isn't easy, it isn't fun, but it is definitely going to be useful and teach us some lessons along the way. And to those kids who work two and three jobs...I salute you.
