Over the past couple of weeks, NBA fans have been glued to their televisions, as it is time for the 2016-2017 season playoffs. From the Cleveland Cavaliers managing to sweep the Indiana Pacers to the Houston Rockets falling short after a tough series against the San Antonio Spurs, this year’s NBA playoff games have been some of the most eventful games in NBA Playoff history. However, the conference finals series between the Cleveland Cavilers and the Boston Celtics is showing signs that it may be a historic series specifically for the Cavs. This is due to the fact that the Cavs achieved multiple NBA records during game 2 of the series.
While Fans, as well as sports critics, were able to conclude that the Cavs would have the upper hand in the series after game 1, no one could have predicted how purely dominating the Cavs would be against the Celtics in game 2.
The first record the Cavs manage to break during game 2 of the 2017 eastern conference finals was at the conclusion of the 2nd half as the Cavs were able to obtain a 41 point lead going into Halftime after J.R. Smith made a spectacular buzzer-beater. This was the largest lead an NBA team has had going into halftime of a Playoff game since the Detroit Pistons were able to obtain a 40 point lead against the Washington Bullets in 1987. Once the game was concluded the Cavs not only secured another W but they secured a few more NBA records as well. When the game was over the Cavs managed to rack up 130 points, which is the most points in a playoffs game in the history of the Cavs franchise. The Cavs 130 points against the Celtics 86 points also made the 44 point deficit the worst deficit for the Boston Celtics during an at home playoffs game. It was also the largest deficit a 1 seed of a conference has ever sustained. When you consider the fact that the Cavs were able to win the last 3 games of last year's final series, causing the Warriors to blow a 3-1 series lead, this victory means that the Cavs have won their past 13 playoff games, which ties them with the most consecutive playoff wins.
While it is beginning to look as if this year’s NBA final series will be a rematch between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors, it is important for the Cavs to remain focused. The must keep the fact the Celtics were able to reach this point based on their skill as a team in mind and finish the series with the same level of aggression as they have had.
