The week of April 2nd-April 9th the much anticipated reboot of The Powerpuff Girls(2016) were born. With it’s new high definition, and new voice cast and animation it brought about much disappointment. At first I was excited because as a child of the 90’s, I loved the show. This was something new and exciting because it meant that part of my childhood had returned. I will admit that I was skeptical when it was mentioned that there would be changes. Changes that would, at least to me, destroy the delicate fabric that made The Powerpuff Girls an iconic show.
There are only a few episodes out but they are not the best, II will admit. My excitement turned to dread and later indifference. I don’t hate the show and yet I don’t like it either. I will continue to judge but still keep an open mind. The rebooting of shows are a rare occasion and yet it is something that should be taken into consideration. The first episodes could be just them getting a feel for their characters and for the script so the real impact the show could have is yet to be determined. I believe that the monsters and villains should have been more thought out and the character designs leaves things to be desired. The girls were perfect just the way they were and yet Buttercup has an unneeded tuft of hair, Blossom’s bow was fine pointy and Bubbles hair was fine how it was. However, I will say that I miss the original voices of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup who are Cathy Cavadini, Tara Strong and E.G. Daily respectively. I do believe that it order to gain a better audience they should have kept the original cast. But I will continue to keep an open mind. The show does have some great aspects like small moments of humor, the occasional bouts of randomness and an awe-inspiring opening sequence.
Like many other children of the 90’s The Powerpuff Girls were a part of our childhoods. The idea that our childhoods could come back enables us to in a sense re-live the past. It doesn’t mean that the past has to fade away but be remembered and be used as a guide to live on in the future. Change is inevitable but at least some aspects of our childhood had returned to us making me eternally grateful. It doesn’t mean that I don’t have times of great nostalgia but we should be appreciative of what we have been given. We still have the voice actors of Tom Kane and Tom Kenny so our childhood is not lost but is standing with a new structural foundation. The past and the present is intertwining which is leading us into a new age and one where we re-live our experience of childhood but it would be supported by the framework of the present. In the end the day is saved by really nobody. The hero is the concept of nostalgia that would continue to grow as this reboot proceeds.
