I believe that censorship and restrictions on children’s books, movies, and television shows, should be lifted. Today, children are becoming more and more vulnerable to receiving harmful information. The popularity of internet use for school projects and homework is higher now than ever, and it is now nearly impossible for children to se the internet without seeing something that should be considered harmful in the news. It is no longer a question as to when they should be exposed to these things, but how.
If children are exposed to negative messages or violence early on through books that promote creativity and higher thought processes, it will make it easier for them to understand what is happening in the real world later in life. Censorship, in my opinion, is put on all of the wrong things.
Creative writing in children’s literature can encourage positive thinking and interpretation of real life events, which can make processing negative information easier later in life. I also feel that censorship should be decided by the parent or guardian of the child receiving it.
An example of this could be the frequent attacks given to the book “Alice In Wonderland”, which is said to exploit improper thinking and belief in the impossible. Another is the ridicule against those encouraging young readers to read about Anne Frank because it is too graphic and is a negative influence.
I believe that if parents want their children to know early on what the world is capable of, and to have a free imagination, they should be free to do so. Society should not have a role in what influences each child specifically, because every person is different.
