I am an avid celery eater.
However, I often feel like celery is under appreciated. Whenever I’m eating celery, I always seem to receive the following remarks:
“That has nothing in it.”
“You’re eating water.”
“Why are you even eating that?”
“Celery has no nutritional value.”
No fear, celery lovers. I am here to disprove all those statements. Keep these handy facts in your back pocket to fight against all celery haters.
Despite popular belief, celery is actually more than just water! It is chock full of antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin K, flavonoids, and many others with long confusing names, such as “dihydrostilbenoids” and “lunularin.”
If you can’t bring yourself to memorize (or prononouce) those specific antioxidants, just know this: antioxidants are powerful little molecules that help keep our bodies running like a well oiled machine. They perform damage control, and are vital to a healthy diet.
As well has being loaded with antioxidants, celery is an anti-inflammatory food. This makes it a great choice for anyone who wants to get good workouts in consistently. It especially helps with inflammation in the digestive tract; a widely seen issue with food allergies in today’s society.
There are studies as well that show celery could possibly be a vital vegetable to fight against cancer. It’s plentiful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory power contribute to this. Whether or not it’s true, I don’t think you have anything to lose by chowing down on a stalk of celery.
Each time we consume any piece of food, it has an acidifying or alkalizing property on the body. In short, excess acid causes uneccesary stress.
Guess what celery does?
It alkalizes!
Celery is beneficial to the body, and helps it to stay at the desired pH because of its alkalizing effect. Not bad for a stick of water, huh?
And just like everybody already knows, celery is virtually void of calories. This makes it a great choice for a midday snack, or an appetizer before a meal. You can still have a snack without worrying.
The low calorie profile of celery is minimal compared to the huge nutritional payoff. I would much rather consume something that benefits my body than worry about it being a low calorie option.
For celery, this is merely an added benefit.
So next time a celery hater comes your way, throw these facts down. They’ll be shocked that what they previously believed was a useless food is actually an incredible source of nutrition.
The Earth is full of some pretty incredible foods, and celery is no exception. Two cheers for celery! You rock!
