Every year, on the first Saturday in June, graffiti and street artists take over Bushwick in Brooklyn for a day of art, music and so much more. You can see all of this at the Bushwick Collective Block Party.
When you see the graffiti art up close in person, you might think to yourself, "What were these guys taking when they did this?" Seriously, words can't even describe how trippy and realistic these works of art are. A couple of my favorites included Law & Order: SVU actress Kelli Giddish touching her nose...
...and a very bizarre skull/fish-hybrid holding up a rabbit flag, entitled Rabbit Eye Movement.
If these art pieces don't enthrall you, that's not the only thing the Bushwick Block Party has. This year, there were several live music acts, mostly hip-hop and rap. Foxy Brown, DJ Evil Dee, and Juelz Santana were just a few of many performers.
There were also plenty of food and drinks, especially drinks. Although I didn't partake in the alcoholic drinks, they were definitely a crowd-pleaser. The Modelo beer garden proved to be enjoyable as ever, as well as those pineapple cups. If you've ever seen someone drink out of a pineapple, they're drinking a pineapple cup. Little did I know it contained lots of alcohol. I remember I went online to get one, since it seemed every other person was drinking one. Then, I found out about the alcohol content and how long the line was, and I said to myself, "This isn't worth it." I was really surprised I didn't see more people fall down from the drinks.
Overall, if you want a fresh, new and fun take on Brooklyn, the Bushwick Collective Block Party is for you. These graffiti artists are some of the best you'll ever see, and what's more fun is that you get to see them actually work on their masterpiece, if you're lucky. You really have to see it to believe it. Just don't drink too many pineapple cups, then you'll really see something.
