Perhaps one of the most ignorant notions has been announced on the news: women are simply TOO covered to go to the beach. In media, the clothing or perhaps attitude women have seems to always take offence to someone around the world. First it was the 'makeup' issue, than the 'free the nipple' controversy, along with a women's attire for warm weather being perceived as too 'racy' for the public to bare. What sets this controversy apart from the others is perhaps the ethics behind it, that it hinders religiously Islamic women from openly embracing their religion in a public setting.
Perhaps the biggest irony in the situation could be the bigotry underlined in these sentiments. Many people try to change the way the rights of Muslim women in Islamic countries are hindered, but what does this situation directly portray? Muslim women are now hindered from their actions and preferences of dress in the country of dress, and many do not realize the switch of oppression!
The legislature of forcing women to wear or not wear certain articles of clothing is the true oppression. These practices are approved in places that give women the worst amount of respect and rights in society. While controversy similar to this regarding the uniform of a women is usually disliked by feminists, this situation should be no different. Feminism is not the freedom to show certain parts of your body, it is the wear to show what you want.
The Burkini should become fundamentally embraced in these communities. Not only will it let Muslim women freely practice their religion, but also portray that they are also willing to accustom to a new culture, which is to be free and open with their hobbies and likes in the outdoors.
