Bomber jackets are one of the newest trends millennials have reinvented from the '90s and now claim as their own. We have reinvented them in a variety of colors that range from typical fall time colors (black, burgundy, sage green), to satin material pastel colors. Bomber jackets could be deemed to be must-have items in your closet and some of the trendiest grabs of the Fall 2016 season, but they were not always just a fashion statement.
The bomber jacket's original name is actually the "flight jacket" or "bombardier jacket." They were originally created for military pilots. In World War I, these jackets were used to keep the pilots warm since most airplanes did not have enclosed cockpits. Later on, the jackets were made to have thick leather and even fur lining on the inside and collar. Two of the most historically known bomber jackets include the A-2 and the G-1, the A-2 created by the Air Corps and the G-1 created by the navy. At one point, both jackets became so popular that they were reinvented for popular culture and even discontinued due to their overwhelming high demand. Later on in the mid-1950s, the MA-1 was created for the American military. This bomber jacket in particular was used exclusively by the Air Force. This was shown through the Air Force's logo being sewn on to the sleeve. This particular feature was one that was constantly altered as other groups of the armed forces adopted the flight jacket. Perhaps because of its popularity amongst hip-hop and pop culture in the mid 1900s, the MA-1 is the jacket that holds the model for most of the bomber jackets that are sold today.
It is fascinating to be able to watch fashion trends such as bomber jackets be reborn into our culture and have the youth make it their own. But it is also important to know the history behind our trends that makes them so significant within our culture. Many thanks goes out to the American military services. Without their need of flight jackets to help get their job done, we would not have one of our favorite trends.
