The Unofficial Big/Little Bucket List For Arkansas Greeks

There are a lot of things I am looking forward to about the upcoming school year such as football games, marching band and finally getting to take classes for my major, but what I am mostly looking forward to is finally getting a little!

I just started making gifts for her and I cannot wait till the Reveal. I took two littles this past school year, one in the fall and one in the spring, but they both dropped before initiation. Hopefully, my little-to-be will make it to initiation, find her home here in Sigma Phi Lambda and become a close friend of mine.

I have been looking forward to getting to pin my little at Initiation since my own initiation in Spring 2016, and even though it did not work out this past year, I am hoping and praying that it does this school year. Anyways, here is a list of things to do and see in Fayetteville with your new little. This does not just apply to Phi Lamb, it applies to any girl who is in a sorority and is planning on being a Big.

Here is my Big/Little Bucket List, in no particular order:

  • Take a Zumba class at the gym on campus together
  • Introduce your little (If they are new to the U of A) to the holy grail known as Mexico Viejo
  • Take them to the trendiest coffee shop in town, in my opinion, Mama Carmen’s
  • Go get meal trade together after chapter
  • Share testimonies
  • Hammocking by Old Main
  • Late night Andy’s run
  • Bachelor-watch party
  • Take a cute pic together at a football game
  • Spend the day at Devil’s Den
  • Farmer’s Market
  • Decorate her door right before Big/Little Reveal and on her birthday
  • Crystal Bridges
  • Have a spa night at your place
  • Rock Climbing at the HPER
  • Wear matching costumes at a themed function
  • Study together at the Mullins Library or the Greek Theatre
  • Go to C3 (or another Bible study or worship night) together

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
