Learning is a continual process that begins when someone is born. Every little thing is new and unique to a baby who is a second old. Everything has to be learned from scratch. There are no hard and fast rules, no formulas that can be memorized; everything is learned from experience and observation. Only after touching something hot is it realized that it hurts. Seeing someone brush his or her teeth is how it is learned, not by memorizing from a book. Even the act of learning how to read and how to study is learned by observing how someone else does it.
Many of the discoveries and inventions of the modern world are due to people observing nature and implementing their observations. Even a simple invention like Velcro was discovered by observing a plant. Many countries around the world have school systems that require students to memorize excessive information. Contrary to that, true learning is when something is observed and physically experienced. Studies show that memorizing actually disrupts learning. Knowledge can have more benefit to the world when it is understood and learned from the root than when it is memorized. Although, there are some facts that have no other way to be learnt besides memorization.
Personally, I have observed that whenever I learn something through experimenting and experience, I always remember it better that just looking at a PowerPoint or a textbook and trying to memorize it. In addition, if something is mindlessly memorized, it can be forgotten at anytime; but if something is understood at a deeper level, it is easier to remember as it is logical. It is due to this fact that more and more teachers in universities let students have formula sheets or equation sheets. It is more important to know how and when to implement your resources than memorizing the resources.
