It is finally that time. Star Wars and all its beauty has reasserted itself into the daily conversation of people, like me, to whom the franchise holds a special place. Rogue One is set to be released Friday and has sent the movie industry into a buzz about how well Disney can pull of this prequel to the fourth movie, A New Hope. With this buzz about this new movie, it is only fair to attempt an article about the storied franchise! So, here are my favorite Star Wars movies in order from least favorite to favorite.
7. Episode 2: Attack of the Clones
This poor movie. Though Anakin is my favorite character, and he experiences a lot of growth in this movie, I simply cannot bring myself to like this movie. It may come from the numerous moments where the viewer feels as though evil is going to win or it may come from the sheer fact that I hate to see Anakin give into his feelings, against Obi Wan's council, and marry Padame. Either way, if you are a fan of this movie, I'm sorry, but I simply cannot make myself watch this movie.
6. Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
Barely beating its sequel, Episode One is a movie that carries mixed feelings with it. On one hand, it has many loveable characters such as Jar-Jar Binks and young Anakin. However, there are also foreboding moments of prophecy by both Master Yoda and Mace Windu when they both address the danger held by the child Anakin. If it wasn't for Quiagon Jen, this movie would become the bottom of the totem pole, but his character and the sheer awesomeness of Darth Maul save this movie from coming in last place.
5. Episode 6: Return of the Jedi
This is a lot of people's favorite out of the series, but to me, it is only number five. Though the movie completes a powerful cycle, with Vader helping his son Luke and the Empire falling, the movie itself seems to move too quickly for its own good. As beautiful a job as Episode Five does at drawing out the storyline a good length, Episode Six loses points for speeding up a plot line that could have been more explored with a more drawn out movie. Episode Six, however, is still a wonderful addition to the franchise.
4. Episode 7: The Force Awakens
The newest installment in the franchise, the seventh episode does a marvelous job of picking up where the sixth movie left off. This transition was hard to make, due to the sheer time gap in between the movies, but it was done well. Where this movie stifles, is in its continuation of certain characters. Any real fan of Star Wars knows that Han had his fair share of close calls with death, what with being frozen and all, but to be killed by his son in front of Chewbacca. I mean come on! Anyone who went and saw the movie had to have felt a sickening sense of pain from his death. While it was something that was bound to happen and something that was done well, the death of Han Solo and the way in which it was carried out will forever follow this movie.
3. Episode 4: A New Hope
These last three are nearly inseparable, but only one can claim the spot atop the list, so here we go. Episode four, though it was the first movie to come out in the series, gives a beautiful entry into the story of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. For its time, the effects are astounding and the famous scene of the Death Star's explosion will forever be locked in cinematic lore. Where this movie falls in at number three comes not from anything the movie necessarily did wrong, but rather from the fact that this may be the only series where the first movie simply isn't the best one. Though it is nothing short of a classic, Episode Four simply doesn't top these last two.
2. Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back
"Luke. I am your father!" Lets be honest here, that quote is what this movie is remembered for. People might say that they remember it because its the first time that you meet Yoda as a character, or that they remember the scene when Han is frozen, or they might even say they remember when Lando is introduced. Lets be real though. We all remember this movie because of Vader's most famous line. That being said, the movie itself is brilliantly done. The battle portrayed between Luke and his feelings, as well as the lightsaber battle between him and Vader, are wonderful themes throughout this movie that sees the Rebellion seemingly crushed. Loyalty, love, strength, and power all run rampant through this movie that some critics have called "the most memorable movie of the 80's".
1. Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith
I know, I know. Many people don't really seem to like this one as much as I do. When your favorite character is Anakin though, this movie is a jewel. Episode Three completes Anakin's journey down the road to the Dark Side and shows his complete betrayal of the Jedi Order. With many unforgettable scenes, including the cleansing of the Jedi temple by Anakin and the incredible lightsaber duel by Yoda and Palpatine, this movie not only completes the story found in episodes one through three, but it also sets into motion the storyline found in episodes four through six. A movie that can do all of this, as well as make us all feel a litany of emotion, definitely takes the top spot for me over the rest of the Star Wars movies.
May the Force be with you all as we journey out to see Rogue One this Friday!
