Spring breaks are ideally spent in Miami, Punta Cana or Cancun, but without the proper planning, savings and motivation, getting there is another story. Searching for the perfect, affordable and easily accessible spring break destination can be difficult, especially when you live on the northern east coast that doesn’t seem to warm up until May. But instead of being stuck at home, gather a few friends and get on the next bus to these fun spring break destinations.
Washington D.C.
For under $25 you can catch a bus to DC from NYC, stay in a cheap hotel and see everything the nation’s capital has to offer. Be prepared to do a lot of walking; there is something to see everywhere you go. The National Mall is an absolute must — you’ve probably seen pictures of the Lincoln Memorial, the reflecting pool and the White House, but what kind of American citizen hasn’t seen them in person! And if you don’t mind waiting in lines, you can make your way down to the national archives and see the original print of the constitution, the declaration of independence. This trip won’t break your budget and you can get so much done in just a few days.
Acadia National Park, Maine
If you’re the outdoorsy type, there is no doubt you have heard of Acadia National Park. If you’re a sucker for beautiful sunrises and sunsets, mountains and rivers and just being absolutely immersed in nature, you’ve got to get to Acadia. If you like camping, there are several camping areas within the park grounds, perfect for a cheap spring break outing. If you prefer a hotel, there are several in Bar Harbor, a short distance from the park. Watching the sunrise from Cadillac mountain is a must on your list, you’ll get to see the sun rise before any other person in the United States.
Burlington, Vermont
So you like the outdoors, but you don’t want to fully commit to a week in the woods? Burlington, Vermont gives you the best of both worlds. Home to the University of Vermont, Burlington is a true college town filled with shopping, nightlife and Ben & Jerry’s. Church Street is bustling with activity and within walking distance, you get to see Lake Champlain. The drive up to Burlington is also one you will fall in love with. It may be a long drive, but trust me, it’s beautiful!
New York City
The big apple is never a bad option, even on a budget. Trips to the city by bus are often inexpensive and finding something to do is far simpler than trying to figure out the subway. If you love to shop, there is truly nowhere better to go than NYC. There is an H&M basically every 10 blocks and the Forever 21 there is to die for. Not looking to spend money? Head into Central park or hit the Bronx Zoo on a Wednesday; both are free and unlike anything you’ve seen before. If you’ve never seen Lady Liberty, climb aboard the Staten Island ferry for a free ride past the statue and a quick and relaxing ride on the water. New York has plenty to offer to students on a budget once you get lodging out of the way.
Myrtle Beach
If you’re really craving the beach and warm temps, South Carolina offers both. Believe it or not, you can catch a pretty inexpensive roundtrip plane to Myrtle Beach, or you can take a long, but cheap bus down south. You’ll be happy to be welcomed by palm trees and miles of beach. Make sure to check Groupon for a cheap beach-side hotel/resort, you’ll be happy to find cost effective rooms, especially when travelling with friends! Relax on the beach or take a trip down the Myrtle Beach boardwalk, you’re bound to find a good time!
