I attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia Highschool in Manhattan as a Drama Major and if you knew me, you would know that's there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that would stop me from embracing my 5-year old self and my childhood. From rolling around in Heelys to pulling up to Calc with a "Finding Dory" binder, I've always found a way to incorporate some childhood fun into my classes. My teachers would challenge me but I was persistent. Earlier this year, my English teacher gave us the assignment to write a Sonnet about loss, love or something a long those lines. A Sonnet is a 14 line poem with a strict pattern and each line can only contain 10 syllables so originally I was stumped and thought I would have to write something boring. I was at a loss... but then...
I conjured my Drama-Major-Pixar-Loving brain and wondered what if I combined...
A little bit of Shakespearean finesse...
And...
The wonderful story of "Finding Nemo."
And within minutes...
I came up with a Shakespearean Masterpiece! Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, and all those other plays are nothing compared to this beauty! I walked up into class, waited for my time to come then badda-bing badda-boom. I read the best sonnet of all time. Ladies and Gents prepare for a dramatic, potentially Oscar-winning Sonnet that shows the dramatic, intense plot of "Finding Nemo" within 14 lines. Now that I've gassed it up, without further ado, here it is.
O! How I wish to find my son again!
My wife killed. And my son? Across the sea
My son was kidnapped by a group of men
So now I venture out to seek out thee
Tragically traveling through terrific turfs
A woman gives her help, She has no clue!
She has a mind quite smaller than the Smurfs
Frequently she gets us lost. She’s cuckoo.
Yet, I thank much for this crazy lady.
In the deepest times, she finds the upsides.
She found the bright light when things got shady.
She would always lead me to the right tides.
Although through all the troubles I scream O!
I know with her I will find my Nemo.
Now when I recited this Sonnet, I didn't tell anybody what it was about, so when I hit them with that last line they didn't know how to react. The class thought that this time I actually veered away from my love for Pixar and my childhood but...
Nope.
Regardless, it was one of the best there. It got a good reaction from the class. :)
My English Teacher
And the few classmates that actually thought I wrote something dark and mature until I hit them the Nemo line at the end...
I'm sharing this with you guys mainly cause I miss high-school and happen to come upon this and just felt like sharing it. But something important that this silly little thing brings up is really just sticking true to yourself and trying to find the fun in whatever you do. Whether you're starting college like myself, already in college, still in high school, working at a job, whatever, try to find the fun and be yourself. Don't be pressured into doing or becoming something you don't want. Stay unique, creative and truthful! And like Dory said, "Just keep swimming!"
Hope you enjoyed!
