Roanoke, Virginia, is the hub of southwest Virginia. With a population of just under 100,000 and a metropolitan area population of over 300,000, Roanoke has a lot to offer. From scenic mountain views, a vibrant downtown area, shopping, and food-galore, there's always something new to try or retry in Roanoke. Here's a list of my favorite places and spots you have to visit when you find yourself in the Star City.
The Mill Mountain Star
Topping the list is the Roanoke Star. The Star overlooks the city atop Mill Mountain and gives Roanoke its nickname, the Star City. It is a quick jump right off of the Blue Ridge Parkway and it's also right beside the Mill Mountain Zoo. If the 180-degree views of the city and mountains aren't enough, be sure to go up to the star at night to see it lit up in all its glory!Wasena City Tap Room
The tap room is located just outside of downtown along the Roanoke River. Home to tons of specialty beer, live entertainment, and great food, Wasena City Tap Room is a must if you find yourself getting hungry in Roanoke.Center in the Square
Center in the Square is a converted warehouse that is home to the History Museum of Western Virginia, the Science Museum of Western Virginia, and the Hopkins Planetarium. For families and anyone who loves learning - Center in the Square is an awesome way to spend your day in Roanoke.
Taubman Museum of Art & Virginia Museum of Transportation
Each of these museums are just a short walk from Center in the Square and offer even more for museum lovers. The Taubman Museum highlights modern artwork from around the globe. The VA Museum of Transportation pays heritage to the history of the railroad industry from which Roanoke is built upon.
Jack Brown's
Located downtown near the City Market Building, Jack Brown's is a local favorite. The original Jack Brown's is located in Harrisonburg, VA, but the Roanoke location has its own special flare. Stop in for Jack Brady and a cold one on a warm afternoon.
Catch a Festival
Roanoke has come so far in recent years and has begun developing festivals to attract tourism to the area. There are always festivals in Dr. Pepper Park, Elmwood Park, and throughout downtown. If you're in the area, be sure to check and see if anything is going on!
Grandin Village
Head over to Grandin Village! Take a break from the busy streets of downtown and the hustle and bustle of Valley View Mall and enjoy a nice meal at one of the quaint restaurants in Grandin. Do some shopping and relax while you're there too!
Fork in the Alley
Relatively close to the Carilion Memorial campus, Fork in the Alley is a treat! Head over for a unique dining experience during the warmer months. If you find yourself downtown make sure to stop by Fork in the Market or catch their food truck!
Head out for a night downtown
Go downtown! Enjoy yourself while you're at it. Have a fancy-shmancy dinner at Blue 5. Then bar hop the night away. Start at Corned Beef & Co., Sidewinders, Cornerstone, Awful Arthur's, and many more. See what Roanoke has to offer!
Roanoke has made strides in becoming one of the premier cities in Virginia. From outdoor recreation to nightlife and everything in between - Roanoke has it all. Spend the day shopping at Valley View Mall and then catch the sun set over the water at Carvin's Cove. No matter what season it is, Roanoke has something to offer!
