This past Thursday and Friday, my friend and I took on New York City with one mission in mind: find the best food and see the best sights. And let me tell you, we found some sweet stuff. We were only in New York for 22 hours, but this is what we accomplished.
Now, there are some basic ground rules everyone needs to know before traveling in the city. Here are just a few:
1. Wear comfortable shoes. You are going to be doing a lot of walking. Your six-inch stiletto heels are going to do nothing but give you blisters and sore calves.
2. Bring cash, but not an excessive amount. Most street vendors do not accept cards, and singles are always useful for tips. But do not bring too much, if your wallet gets stolen, you're SOL (and money).
3. Be aware of your surroundings. If you feel uncomfortable in an area, get out of there. And keep your valuables close to your body, or leave them home altogether.
Got it? Good. Now we can move onto the real stuff.
New York is home to many things, food being one of them. While walking through the streets, we happened upon some delicious spots. Warning: some of these spots are seriously delectable, but seriously expensive, pick only one or two if you're on a budget!
Levain Bakery
Located just a few blocks from Central Park, this bakery is a hidden gem. While most famous for its cookies, there are still plenty of other options to choose from for the baked goods enthusiasts.
Murray's Cheeses
People in New York are crazy about their cheeses. So much so they have a store dedicated just to the fine dairy product. But don't be fooled by the posh cheese wheels, Murray's has some wild sandwiches behind its counters, including a five-cheese grilled cheese that'll knock your socks off.
Sugar Factory
This one is a little more expensive. And by little more, I mean hella expensive. This Goblet was $30, and there wasn't even alcohol in it! But trust me, it's one of the greatest experiences you'll ever drink in your life. Many celebrities have visited this restaurant, including the Kardashians, Lucy Hale and Drake.
Big Gay Ice Cream Shop
The name is exactly what this creamery brings: pure happiness. This hole-in-the-wall shop is home to the Salty Pimp, a vanilla ice cream cone laced with dulce de leche and dipped in chocolate. Oh yeah, it's as good as it sounds.
Okay, so after a certain point, there's really not much more food you can physically fit into your stomach. That is where the sightseeing comes in. You get to check out the cool spots in the city as well as burn off all the food you just stuffed your face with.
Music
During the summer, Good Morning America hosts their Summer Concert Series, where popular artists perform for free in Central Park. Concerts usually start at 7 a.m. and go rain or shine.
Architecture
One thing that's great about the Big Apple is that the buildings are so diverse. From classic brownstone to modern skyscrapers, you'll never get bored of the streets you'll walk down.
Signage
Just take a walk down any street and you'll be amused by the signs some stores come up with. From puns to dirty jokes, New York has got it all.
Views
Two words. Hy Line. This park is amazing. Down in the Meatpacking district, it's a garden above the city that has places to relax and great spots to see the city.
