The Best Decor I Bought For My Dorm Room

Seriously, buy a rug.

The Best Decor I Bought For My Dorm Room

In college, your dorm room literally becomes your home. It's where you'll probably spend most of your time, so you're gonna want it to really match your personality and keep you comfortable! My freshman year, my room was decorated very cliche, with the brightly colored sheets and excessive amount of gadgets I thought I couldn't live without. However, this year I really toned it down and worked to create an atmosphere that was much more in tune with my character.

Himalayan Salt Lamp

I swear I always have my salt lamp on. Not only does it slightly purify the air, it has a really pretty color scheme that makes my room look put together, even when the floor is covered in paper and clothes.

French Press (so much better than a Keurig)

I had been using a Keurig for so long, throwing away money to buy those KCups that honestly are so terrible for the environment. But with my french press, I just throw some grounds in with a cup of hot water and have an honestly much better tasting cup of coffee.

Paintings done by friends

Last year, my walls were originally, and sparingly, covered with classic paintings like "Starry Night" or a poster I bought online. This year, however, I chose to hang some of my friends' artwork, as well as my own, to remind me of home and what I love to do most.

Storage Cube (for all that extra clutter)

I bought a storage cube from Walmart this Summer and it changed my life. It's made of wood, has 4 open shelves, and literally saved me. I store all of my kitchen utensils, mugs, seasonings, coffee, etc. in it and it cleared up so much space in my room.

Shoe Bin

Last year my shoes were literally all stored under my bed, collecting dust until I decided to wear them again. This year, I purchased a wooden shoe bin lined with a material to collect any carried dirt or grass, that I store all of my shoes in. It keeps my room clear from tracking dirt and grime on my carpets and it looks good too.

Carpet

I stand by my opinion that putting down a carpet in your room actually makes the space look so much bigger. I don't know what kind of witchcraft it is, but I swear it expanded the space of my room so much and it's so much easier to clean than it would be to try and vaccuum the dark rug underneath.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
