The Best Compliment

The greatest compliment I have ever received.

Compliments are amazing things. A few simple words that can make someone's day a little brighter, make their mood a little happier and turn a frown upside down in an instant. Compliment someone's outfit, their shoes, how they did their hair that day or their work presentation. Compliments are universal and unique. Sometimes, someone can give a compliment without even knowing. My favorite compliment I ever receive is when someone asks me "you really love what you do, don't you?" This person probably didn't even know that their question made me feel amazing. They gave me the best compliment imaginable and they didn't even know it.

Doing something you're passionate about and being recognized for it by a random bystander is such an uplifting feeling. Someone who knew nothing about me, who only just met me in that moment and who had a 15 minute conversation with me, was able to see my passion and make a comment like that. It made my day so much better and it was by far the best compliment I have ever received. I always appreciate any and every compliment I receive but this particular, unintended compliment left me a little speechless.

Compliments about something I love are the best compliments I could ever get. I'm a big believer in going after what you are most passionate about and doing what you love to make the most of the life you live so when someone recognizes my passions just by observation, it solidifies and reassures me about what I want to do with my life. Not that I'm ever unsure about what I want in life, but hearing a stranger strike confidence and understanding in me makes me feel even better about my choices.

In the particular moment I'm talking about, I was at the aquarium I volunteer at on a Saturday afternoon, working at the stingray touch tank. A family was there with two little girls and they were super into touching the stingrays and learning things about them. I got into a discussion with the girls' father about sea animals, the stingrays in particular. I was talking about the cow nose stingrays and the shape of their wings and he just looks at me and says "wow, you really love what you do, don't you?" and all I could really say was "well yeah I guess I do" with a nervous chuckle. After that moment I couldn't stop smiling. Here I was, volunteering my time to educate people about animals on a Saturday and someone was able to recognize my love and passion for it in an instant. It made it even better knowing that this wasn't even my actual job. It was just something I enjoy doing in my free time and I still exude just as must love and passion as I would if it was my day to day job. That tells me right there I'm doing what I love and what makes me happy and I'm definitely chipping away at the path to my dream job.

So now anytime I feel down or confused about my future, I just think about that dad who pin pointed my passion just by the way my voice sounded when I was talking about an animal, or how my eyes sparkled when educating his kids. So, thanks Florida dad for giving me the greatest compliment of my life and remember everyone, pursue your passion and always do what you love.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
