The Benefits Of Long Distance Friends

Just because we only see each other once a year doesn't mean we aren't friends all year.

The Benefits Of Long Distance Friends

Sometimes you meet people when you are on vacation or at a convention. These people are usually from all around the world and that makes it just that much harder when you have to leave them. While having long distance friends can be hard, there are actually many hidden pluses that people don't realize. You may only see them once or twice a year, but that just makes the moments you see them that much better. Here are some of the ways that having a long distance friend is an amazing thing.

1. Because of timezones, there is someone to talk to at every hour of the day.

You never have to worry about waking someone up because there is always someone awake on Skype ready to talk to you. Especially if they are far enough away that your days and nights are completely opposite each other.

2. You get to make fun of each other's accents and slang words.

It doesn't matter how far away they are, everyone has their own accent. My favorite is when they talk really fast and you only catch one or two words that you actually understand. My friend and I once had a very, very heated discussion about the difference between tea time and dinner time. APPARENTLY they are the same thing. I think.

3. If you are ever in the need of a vacation spot, they are always offering up their homes.

I have been lucky to study with two of my long distance friends on different occasion, and that just makes it so much more fun to travel. Also, they know all the fun spots to go to in their area, so you've got a built-in tour guide.

4. You get a pen pal, including care packages!

I love receiving letters and packages in the mail, and having a long distance friend means more of this! We have always sent Christmas cards to each other. Also, some foods and snacks aren't available everywhere so care packages are a fun way to try new things and experience new cultures.

5. You always have an impartial person to listen to your problems.

You never have to worry about boring them with your day-to-day life or your problems because they just love to hear about your life.

7. Seeing them in person is that much better.

Seeing a long distance friend again is one of the best feelings in the world. You have to do the stereotypical run-and-jump into each other's arms or else the reunion isn't really official. Because you only see each other once every one or two years, this makes your hang-outs really special and you never want to waste a moment.

I adore my long distance friends. Sure, I miss them like crazy when I don't seem them, but I consider a lot of them my best friends. Having a long distance friendship can be a bit hard sometimes, but that is what Skype and Snapchat were created (duh).

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
