The Beginning Of A Journey

The first in many blogs while studying abroad.

Before arriving in Dublin, I took a flight to Frankfurt, Germany, so I can officially say I was in another country, even if I didn't leave the airport. After finally landing in Dublin and poorly navigating the taxi stand, I arrived at the hotel for my pre-program orientation.

The next day was the first orientation. I met the staff members and had the night to explore the city of Dublin. After signing the bridge over the river that separates the north and the south, I went with a few of the other students to dinner at a local restaurant.

The second day was full of meetings and at the end we went to Experience Gaelic Games where we learned the skills of hurling, Gaelic football, and wall ball. For any of those who really know me, yes I was truly horrible and it was hilarious to watch so I'm told. I highly recommend Experience Gaelic Games for anyone visiting Dublin and interested in the sports played in the country.

On the third and final day I finally got to move into my new apartment. Located in Rathmines, just outside of City Center, my apartment has a fifth story view of the whole town plus more. The town is beautiful and full of sights to see.

Although I didn't really get to see much of the city when we all first moved in, I did get to the following day. While exploring the city with some other students, we walked through the Church of Mary Immaculate which would have been plenty to see.

Following our visit to the church, we continued to walk all throughout the city of Rathmines. After narrowly escaping an attack from swans, we found the birthplace of Bernard Shaw. Unfortunately, like the Irish Jewish Museum, it was not open at the time for visitors.

The final stop on our walk was the beautiful St. Kevin's Church. It was hard for me to believe that people attend this church every week because of the intricacy of the stained glass windows and sculptures.

Although I still haven't been given my internship placement, don't know when my classes are, am a bit homesick (which I'm sure will get worse), and am stumbling through even simple things, I could not be happier. Dublin has been good to me so far and I can't wait to what it has in store.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
