I'm taking a short story class and I fell in love with the beauty and work that goes into them. These are stories that are economical, have special languages and techniques, and deliver all kinds of messages that speaks to the human experience. Below are three reasons you should read short stories!
A variety of options for you!
Like many novels, short stories can come in a variety of genres, forms,
More accessible!
It's in the name. Short stories are usually shorter than a novel, even though there are discussions about that as well (but I'm not getting into that). They are good reads if you're having lunch, taking a break from something, or as audio books if you're doing exercise.
I use accessible lightly because you have some short stories that last more than 20 pages (Anthony Doerr's "The Caretaker"), and some that are only a page or so (Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl"). Chances are that you're going to get through that short story faster than a novel.
Great price depending on what you are getting!
Short stories usually come in anthology collections, which is a good bargain for your money. A standard novels costs between $11 and $20 (if it's not hardback). With anthologies, it could be between $20 and $30, but with the volume of stories you're getting, it's really worth it. As stated before, if these short stories have a lot of depth, then it has as much content (if not more) than a novel sometimes.
Like any story or book you read, you should share short stories you find with friends! Have some genuine discussions and talks, and it will make it much more enjoyable! You wouldn't believe what you learn! Happy reading!
