The Basics Of Caring

Because they never know what they have until it's gone

11
The Basics Of Caring

Don’t start now. You were doing so good all on your own. You were so focused on yourself and getting stuff done, so why is it that all of a sudden your attention is all turned on to him?

Stop thinking of his impeccable smile and the way your heart skips a beat when he looks at you. Stop now. Stop thinking that this boy is going to give up his perfect games of nightly hit-it-and-quiet-it’s just to have you laying in his perfectly sculpted arms. Stop now. Stop thinking that you have to look calm and collected whenever he walks by, not allowing your weird self to sparkle through. Stop thinking so much. Stop talking so much. Stop looking so much. Because if he wanted you... he would be standing there in front of you.

He would make no hesitation to approach you and look you directly in the eyes with his sweet, intense stare. He wouldn’t just stand there staring at you and purposely walking by you in hopes that you’d talk to him. He wouldn’t let you walk out of that door without a smile on your face and your lips on his. He would find you and go get you. He would grab your hand and squeeze it with rough hands and a softened heart. He would run his hands through your hair and kiss you every chance he got. He wouldn’t let you walk away. Hell, he wouldn’t let you go.

What you have to do now is solely let yourself not give a damn. You have to care about yourself and only what you want to be putting up with every waking day. You have to stop thinking about what he’s doing and if what he’s doing is going to hurt you because, let’s be honest, he doesn’t give a f***. When he’s off doing his own thing he’s not thinking about what is going to hurt you. He’s thinking about what’s going to make him happy and that, that my love, should be you. You should be making every move you want to make in hopes that it would make YOU and only you happy.

Things didn’t happen the first time because you were searching for him and trying to get his attention. It happened because you weren’t. It happened because you were doing you and having a blast and unexpectedly, the opportunity gracefully fell into your lap.

So stop now with the grieving and “I’m hoping things get better” s***, because the only way things are going to get better is if you’re happy with the decisions you're making. A woman cares solely for the sake of others, but a man, a man only cares once the woman has stopped trying all together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
