I am a musician. I understand the passion and the feeling of wanting to send a message through music. Especially in today’s society, the best way to spread love and acceptance is through a song. People listen to that. Speeches and simple words do not always get through to people. Humans feel things so strongly and sometimes cannot find the right words to express them, and it is ever so frustrating. There is an indie-alternative rock band from California that puts your feelings into words and can automatically brighten your day. They are incredibly energetic and know how to join people together to let go of worries even for three minutes and thirty seconds.
The Mowgli’s, from L.A., California, began releasing music in 2010, where they graced the world with a demo of songs, including “San Francisco”. Being my personal favorite song off of of their album, Waiting for the Dawn, “San Francisco” debuted their inner activists for love when they sing “I’ve been in love with love and the idea of something binding us together, you know that love is strong enough”. Think about it. Think about how you feel when you are in love. Maybe it’s with a person, a place, a song. Think about how much you love that feeling. I have seen the Mowgli’s perform live three times in the last year and I can say without a doubt that the whole venue is bound and brought together when everyone sings that line at the top of their lungs.
Their second album, Kids In Love, included songs with lyrics that were meant to make you feel love and happiness every time you hear them. If you are ever feeling sad or alone, give a listen to “I’m Good”, “You’re Not Alone”, “Whatever Forever”, and “Bad Dream”. These are the four songs that helped me out of a really tough time. Each holds their own message there you can get through hard times and that life can be as beautiful as you will let it.
The Mowgli’s are all activists for love and acceptance. They strive to ensure that people feel good about life. Katie Earl, a lead singer/percussionist for the band, is an exceptionally inspiring human being. She is vocal about her beliefs for equality and women's empowerment and works hard to remind people that they are loved, accepted, and are beautiful.
In October, 2016, the band released their latest album, Where’d Your Weekend Go?, which was yet another fantastic work of art. Shortly after this album, they released an stand-alone single called “Times Are Still Changing” to address peace and love in light of the 2016 presidential election. Josh Hogan, singer and guitarist, stated how the election effected everyone, both in the states and globally, and how the band felt that it was important to honor democracy and use their voices. Like the song says, times are changing. Hogan states how this songs hold true to how we must unite to make those changes for the better.
This band changed my life. I have not seen a bad day that some Mowgli’s songs couldn’t fix. For those of you who are not familiar with the Mowgli’s, give them a listen. I promise that you will not be disappointed.
To the Mowgli's: thank you for making my life significantly better and for bringing such love to the world.
