The Awards season is upon us. The Golden Globes aired last night and the Oscars are coming right around the corner. Do I love award shows? Yes I do, but I also realize all the politics that goes into a person being nominated to even winning and very often the best performances are not the one that wins.
There is a lot of politics that goes into being nominated for an award and even more politics that goes into campaigning for your role and your film. However for a better explanation of this phenomenon I linked a clip to the show Adam Ruins Everything which dives into this much deeper.
So yes, awards shows are virtually a popularity contest that do not always reward people for their abilities. This may be why we see shut-outs of indie movies such as Tangerine in last year's Oscars or why Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep have been nominated for some not so great films.
However, I will still watch award shows until the end of time because they celebrate some of my favorite forms of media. I love seeing all of Hollywood suit up into amazing clothing as well as the passionate speeches that the winners give.
These shows can also do good and spread awareness, much like what occurred last night at the Golden Globes. Many celebrities used their position of being in the spotlight to speak out against the inequalities happening to people in the United States as well as around the world. We also get to celebrate milestones being made such as actors of color getting the recognition they deserve, for shows that do not romanticize what it is like to be a person of color in today's America.
So yes, awards shows are often a popularity contest but that doesn't make them special. We see the underdog pulling a major upset, we see Leo finally getting the Oscar, and we see breakout stars coming into their own.
Also, without awards show we would have never seen this amazing moment last night.
