This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending my first Army vs. Navy football game; It was the 116th game for the famous rivalry. It was an early morning for me since my parents had to come and get me from my school, Salisbury University, and travel back home to Baltimore.
We had breakfast in Salisbury and then made our way to Midshipmen Store at the Naval Academy to get some gear. I had been meaning to get a Navy crew sweater and luckily found the one I wanted, as well as a very warm ugly Navy Christmas sweater. We had to head home to get our tickets and went straight to Raven Stadium.
I was completely bundled up from head to toe. It was 34 degrees in Baltimore and a good majority of the game, I was alright due to the sun shining on my side of the field. When we get inside the stadium, we had to walk up several ramps to get to section 548, which was a good workout, since I had been training for a marathon for the past few months.
We get to our seats and I'm ready to watch the game. I was sitting there before the game for about two hours. The game, or rather the pre-game stuff, had been going on. We were able to see the West Point cadets have their march on, which was amazing to watch. I had seen Navy march on from the parades they have when my brother was a plebe and I wasn't all the impressed because I could ALWAYS find one person who was not walking in time with everyone else in the brigade.
After the West Point cadets finished their walk on and did their about face from one side of the field to other, they walked off and the audience was entertained from the numerous Army Navy commercials the students from each school made. Even though I was cheering for Navy, Army's commercials were very funny and a lot more entertaining than Navy's — I'm sorry!
The pre-game continues and a handful of Midshipmen and Cadets go onto the field and it was both schools women and men glee clubs, who were directed by Naval Academy's Aaron Smith. My brother happens to be apart of the Men's Glee Club, so it was nice to know that he as well as many other Midshipmen and Cadets representing our country through song.
Here is the video of them singing the National Anthem:
Then there were Navy Seals as well as Army soldiers jumping out of planes and landing on the field. It was really cool. Then, the Army helicopters as wells as a few jets from the Navy went across the field. Then, the game finally begins.
Throughout the entire game, which pissed me off to no end, the Midshipmen couldn't seem to keep the ball, without either fumbling it or getting it intercepted by the Cadets. Of course, I'm surrounding by fans cheering for Army, which surprised me since it was Navy "territory" in a way.
By halftime, I fingers were cold and my toes were practically frozen, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the rest of the game. The second half starts and Navy finally scores and the score was 14-7 and had then gotten to 14-10. I was getting excited. Maybe Navy could come back and win — Boy, was I mistaken.
Army kept stealing the ball and honestly, they came to win. Navy had been undefeated for 15 games against Army and Army was hungry for it. You could tell that they wanted to win and that's why they did win. It was a pretty amazing sight seeing the Cadets run onto the field as well as many fans into the middle of the field. Navy had played and sung their Alma Mater and then Army did the same, only it took longer because majority of the student body as well as the band had been on the field, which was pretty comical.
All and all, it was a very interesting experience. Would I go again? Maybe. If it was in a warmer location, I'd DEFINITELY be there. Congratulations to Army for winning after 15 years of losing to Navy.
. . . Go Navy!
