In college, you usually have to stay on campus your freshman year. But, after that, it's a free for all. So, I happily enjoyed my first year and a half on campus. It was convenient, close and I always knew I was safe. But for some reason, I decided to move off campus and into the world of adulthood. When I made this decision, I ran into several issues really quickly.
1. Finding a place in St. Augustine to live is next to impossible.
An accurate depiction of what a Zillow map looks like for a college student.
2. The moment you mention that you're a college student you get denied.
"And, denied!" Obviously, we do need some backups Elle.
3. When you end up finding a place, you realize there's a lot wrong with it.
That is probably the most accurate picture and saying for my situation right now.
4. The rent for the perfect studio you found is outrageous.
Again, scarily accurate.
5. Your landlord is basically nonexistent.
How are they always doing something?
6. Your neighbors and neighborhood is questionable.
That is how probably how your neighbors view you and how you view your neighbors.
7. You are no longer right next to everything like you were in the dorms.
Everything is suddenly so far away...
8. And if you don't like the place, then you have to move again.
And then you have to start all over again. (Also, you got to love some stock images like this one.)
All in all, if I had one thing to tell freshman who complain about living in the dorms, it would be that they have no idea how good they have it! It's close to everything; you're living literally right upstairs from the dining hall and there is massive security in that building. While getting out of there and into your own place is great -- and I wouldn't change a thing -- take your time and enjoy the dorms while you have it. Because trust me, you will miss it once you leave it.
