To me, Halsey has to be one of the best artists that my generation has seen. From her songs to her style, her amazing voice and her humble personality, she is just an overall wonderful artist. Ever since the song "Closer" with Chainsmokers and Halsey released, all I have heard are constant comments like “isn’t she the girl with Chainsmokers on that song? I love her”. I wore a Halsey Badlands t-shirt and I got so many comments that day on this song. Me being a huge fan of Halsey, I take offense to this because I realize that these people have not gotten the chance to appreciate such a uniquely beautiful artist. This song is pretty awesome, but Halsey isn’t just “that girl”, she is an amazing artist with a deep soul and her own uplifting songs.
Halsey by far has one of the most unique and captivating voices in the music industry. Her lyrics are written so beautifully and I am pretty sure she is just all together a musical and artistic genius. When talking about the album, Halsey explains that the name Badlands, refers to the bad parts of her mind or the places you simply don’t go. Her deliberately addressing things that seem somewhat taboo or unsafe, shows what type of artist she is. That is, a daringly amazing one. Whenever I watched an interview with her talking about the album, I immediately loved it even more because of this deeper concept. Topics that as a society, we tend to steer clear of, Halsey drives right into and writes an amazing song about because most of the time, these are the more so important ones. She teaches us to not let our demons hold us down, that it's okay to be a reckless hurricane and that love is full of colors.
Now, of course, her music is one of my favorite things about her, but I have to say that the person behind the voice is just as awesome. She holds close to her that she remains honest with her fans. She doesn’t publicize her problems or anything, but she is very upfront and honest about them in order to show the world that she is still a human being too. This shows her fans that not only is her music relatable, but her life is relatable in a sense. Halsey has a unique relationship with her fans. I notice other artists or “stars” are constantly separating themselves from their fans whereas Halsey wants her fans to feel as if she is equal with them. Since she is so humble, I always see her reaching out to fans on social media, and always being extremely nice whenever meeting fans. Most artists act as if they are superior or better whereas Halsey admits that she is human and has a more so “hey what’s up” kind of attitude.
Her ability to relate to her fans on a real life aspect, makes her music mean that much more. I have noticed that she uses her fame as a way of supporting some pretty important causes. One being mental health. As I said earlier, Halsey loves to bring attention to the topics that society tends to darken. Mental health is constantly being pushed down and artists especially, never really give their input on it. Since Halsey can relate in this way, she has almost become an advocate which has shown her fans that they are not alone. Her achievements only show those that are struggling, that they can do it as well which makes her pretty inspiring and I don't even think she fully realizes that. I also love that Halsey isn’t society’s idea of a “perfect woman”. Younger girls and women are constantly seeing stars in the media that are altogether feminine and tend to think that that is the only way of being truly beautiful. Halsey steps completely out of this idea and is just herself which she totally rocks. She inspires other young women to just be themselves and to not conform to society’s idea of “beautiful”, but more so be your own idea of beautiful.
If you have not heard any of her work, I highly advise going and checking her out.
