It’s the spookiest time of the year, where the leaves are changing color and there’s pumpkins everywhere. We’ve finally reached the point where there’s always a holiday to look forward to, and nothing gets you in the holiday spirit more than a great playlist! There's a severe lack of explicitly Halloween music, because Christmas has pretty much hogged the holiday-themed music spotlight. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some great songs that'll get you pumped for decorating pumpkins and trick-or-treating!
1. The Monster Mash- Bobby Pickett
The classic. It’s the one we’re all expecting, so let’s get it out of the way in the beginning.
2. This is Halloween- The Nightmare Before Christmas
When you listen to this song on October 1, it officially becomes Halloween. (Panic! at the Disco and Marilyn Manson have also covered it.)
3. Emperor's New Clothes- Panic! At the Disco
Panic! has always been a big fan of Halloween ever since their "It's Almost Halloween" video back in 2008, and they haven't lost their spooky emo roots just yet. This music video's pretty epic, and this along with "LA Devotee" is bound to get you in the Halloween spirit!
4. Bloody Valentine- Good Charlotte
A throwback to the good ol' Good Charlotte middle school days.
5. Coin Operated Boy- The Dresden Dolls
October is a great time to start getting into new bands you'll wind up listening to all the time. Try some dark cabaret with The Dresden Dolls. They're theatrical, unique, and an all-around great duo.
6. Witch Doctor- Ross Bagdasarian
It may be cliched, but we all secretly love it when it comes on at a Halloween party. Plus, we all remember the Rugrats version.
7. Do You Love Me?- The Mighty Boosh
Although it's not a Halloween show, The Mighty Boosh is filled with wild costumes and characters. With the Hitcher, the Moon, the Crack Fox, and a ton of others, I imagine a Boosh-themed costume party would be nothing short of glorious. Old Gregg has always been the favorite, and any home-made Old Greg costume is bound to be a hit.
8. Rusholme Ruffians- The Smiths
What better way to celebrate the darkness of Halloween than by listening to a song about a boy who gets stabbed at the fair?
9. Rose Tints My World- The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Rocky Horror has always been a Halloween favorite, and it’s getting even more attention now that the new Fox version just came out. It’s fun, sexy, and all of the songs are amazing. There’s Damn It Janet, Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch Me, and the legendary Sweet Transvestite. But this one has always been an unappreciated favorite of mine.
10. My Cat- Jack off Jill
Jack of Jill is a pretty great riot grrrl band with a bunch of great songs (ie. "Strawberry Gashes," "Nazi Halo," "Angel's F***, Devils Kiss") but this one is just so dark and morbidly hilarious.
11. Somebody's Watching Me- Rockwell feat. Michael Jackson
It's spooky, and it's a lot better than "Thriller" in my opinion.
12. Heart-Shaped Glasses- Marilyn Manson
When you want to listen to something dark and edgy, but you're not quite ready for "Antichrist Superstar" just yet.
13. I Put a Spell on You- Screamin' Jay Hawkins
No matter the version, this song is always pretty creepy. Whether it's Nina Simone, Creedence Clearwater Revival, or Marilyn Manson, it's perfect for Halloween.
14. 21st Century Cure- Repo! The Genetic Opera
If you want to watch a gory rock opera about a dystopian society that advertises organ transplants like plastic surgery, and then repossesses the organs if you can't make the payments, then "Repo!" is the movie for you. There’s an underlying message about the superficiality of society, but it's entertaining enough to watch at face value. It features Alex Vega as the lead, and Paris Hilton plays a a spoiled brat addicted to changing her face.
15. Bodies- Drowning Pool
Let the bodies hit the... FLOOOORRRRRRRRRRR
16. A Little Piece of Heaven- Avenged Sevenfold
Just a warning: this song is about murder and necrophilia, and it's pretty disturbing. So if you really want to get into the dark side of Halloween, listen to this one. It's like a 7 minute horror film.
