The ABCs Of Summer Camp!
Mary Interdonati

It's almost the time of year where I pack up my car and head to my favorite place in the world: my summer camp. Camp is a place where thousands of kids of all ages yearn all year to return to, because of the incredible memories and friendships made in previous summers. This is an A-Z list of all things summer camp, things I can't wait for.

A is for... Arts and Crafts

A classic camp activity. Dream catchers, friendship bracelets, tie die, and drawing can always improve your day.

B is for... Bunks

It would definitely not be camp if you didn't have to climb a ladder into your top bunk, or hit your head on the way into your bottom bunk.

C is for... Campfires

Giphy

The perfect time to roast marshmallows, make s'mores, sing songs, and bond with your cabin mates.

D is for... Dining Hall

It is always exciting when it's time to go to the dining hall, as playing sports and doing camp activities can make you really hungry.

E is for... Endless Nature and Adventure

Being away from home and your cell phone for a few weeks really allows you to appreciate the beautiful world around you.

F is for... Fun in your Cabin

Some of the best camp memories come from down time in your cabin, showing off weird talents to your new friends, or learning about where everybody is from.

G is for... Goals

So many different kinds of goals are made at camp. Goals in soccer and lacrosse are amazing, but personal goals are very important at camp as well.

H is for... Hiking

Hiking is a camp staple, as it is the most rewarding thing to make it to the top of a mountain and appreciate the views.

I is for... Independence

Being away from home and your parents allow you to become more independent and learn how to do more things for yourself.

J is for... Jamming

Playing the ukelele, guitar, or singing are all integral to the summer camp experience.

K is for... Kayaking

Days on the lake are the best days.

L is for... Learning New Things

Camp is all about learning about yourself, others, and the world.

M is for... Making Friendship Bracelets

Making bracelets for all of your new friends is so fun. Learning to make the most advanced patterns is the best part, and the ultimate goal is to get a camper's wrist (10 bracelets from 10 different people).

N is for... New Friends

Camp friends are the best kind of friends.

O is for... Outdoors

Nothing is more fulfilling than spending your summer surrounded by nature and wildlife.

P is for... Packing

Maybe not the best and most fun part of going to camp, but certainly one of the most important. Shorts, T-shirts, sunscreen, bug spray, your tennis racket, are all things to make sure you have tucked away in your trunk before leaving your house.

Q is for... Quiet Time/Rest Hour

One of the most sacred parts of the camp day, as it gives you valuable time to rejuvenate for the rest of the day.

R is for... Running and Playing Sports

At camp, running is in almost every game.

S is for... Singing

The Singing starts as soon as you wake up, and right before you go to sleep at camp. It never really stops.

T is for... Theatre

Whether you participate in theatre at home or not, it doesn't matter at camp. Acting in a camp show is the ultimate way to bring yourself out of your comfort zone, and it is really fun too.

U is for... Uniqueness

Cookies + Sangria

Uniqueness is valued at camp more than anywhere else, so when you're at camp, celebrate you!

V is for... Vespers

A quiet time for cabins to reflect on their days and time at camp.

W is for... Waterskiing

The day you get up on skis is most definitely the best day ever.

X is for... X-traordinary Counselors

www.camptakota.com

The people that allow you to be your best self, while being constantly spirited and enthusiastic.

Y is for... Yoha!

This one is specific to my camp, but two hands put together in the air means that something positive happened!

Z is for... Zip lining

It feels like you're actually flying!

Whether you're commuting or dorming, your first year of college is a huge adjustment. The transition from living with parents to being on my own was an experience I couldn't have even imagined- both a good and a bad thing. Here's a personal archive of a few of the things I learned after going away for the first time.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.

For many undergraduates across the nation, the home stretch has begun. Only one more semester remains in our undergraduate career. Oh, the places we will go! For the majority of college seniors, this is simultaneously the best and worst year out of the past four and here’s why.

1. The classes you are taking are actually difficult.

A schedule full of easy pottery throwing and film courses is merely a myth on the average campus. With all of those prerequisites for the upper-level courses and the never-ending battle you fight each year during registration for limited class seats, senior year brings with it the ability to register for the final courses you need to fulfill your major. Yet, these are not the easy entry level courses. These are the comprehensive, end of major, capstone courses designed to apply the knowledge from all your previous courses, usually in the form of an extensive research paper or engaged learning project. The upside is you actually probably really enjoy these classes but alas there is no room for slackers here.
