So everyone leaves home at some point. Many times the first experience someone will have leaving home is when they start college. It’s a major step in a young person's life and that can lead to some interesting emotions.

Now this may not apply to everyone but most people will feel at least some of these emotions in the process of moving out!

1. Oh my god YES, I am so excited to leave this place!

So let’s face it, after 18 years of living at home and 4 grueling years of high school usually students going into their freshman year of college are pretty pumped to get out of their hometown. The idea of a new location, new experiences and a ton of independence is an incredibly exciting thought so you are more than ready to pack up your stuff and hit the road.

2. Ummm I have to pack up ALL of my stuff?

This can vary for many but most people I know have quite a bit of stuff they aren’t willing to part with and, therefore, it goes to college with them. The sheer idea of packing up your life can be very overwhelming and it’s okay to have a couple nervous breakdowns. It’s a crazy feeling to pack up all of your stuff to leave home for the first time. Even the years after that when you may be leaving for college as an upperclassman can be a lot to handle. But you can do it! Stay organized and do it gradually over the summer.

3. I’m not so sure I want to leave…

It’s very normal to have some minor second thoughts about leaving home. I mean, it has been your place of comfort throughout your entire life. Once you leave you will have to take care of yourself which means making your own meals, managing your time and making good decisions without the direct help of your parents. But don’t let those things freak you out. Hopefully, you will surprise yourself and really step up to the plate once you get to school!

4.I’m so sad, I’m saying goodbye to everyone I love.

Okay it’s true, you will have to say goodbye to friends, family, significant others, etc. But it will all be okay. Your family will always be there and if your relationships with your friends and significant others are strong enough you’ll make it through. If those relationships don’t make it through, maybe they just weren’t meant to be. Although that's something that's hard to come to terms with, believe me, it may be for the better! You will also meet so many amazing people in college and will make friends that you will become super close with. So don’t worry, it’s hard but everything will be okay!

5. Okay move in day, I’m ready!

Move in day!!! It is the most exciting day of the year. You get to set up your room which is a ton of fun and you get to meet a lot of students who you will be interacting with for the rest of your college career. The excitement kicks in and you will forget any doubts you ever had. Hopefully (I’ll cross my fingers for you) you will love your school and realize very quickly that you are where you are meant to be!

So no matter what your feelings are throughout the summer know that you have so much fun coming your way because college is awesome! Good luck!

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
