The 5 Stages Of Missing Your Roommates Over Break

They're 100 miles away, and you still need to tell them about the awkward moment you just had.

Roommates are like ice cream; they're always there for you when you're upset, you're happier when they're around, they're sometimes nutty but mostly sweet, and they're always cool. You spend so much time with your roommates that you sometimes forget awesome they truly are. That is, until you go on break and realize how much you need them in your life to help make outfit decisions, watch a sad movie, or waste time watching cat videos on Youtube. You live with them in a small, white-walled dorm, you eat dinner with them every night, you accidentally wake each other up in the morning, and you still somehow miss them like crazy after a few short days apart. So, in honor of spring break being in full swing and missing my roommates incredibly, here are the five stages of missing your roommates over break:

1. Denial

On the Friday before break you say your goodbyes with a hug and an "I'll miss you," but it doesn't quite hit you how much you will actually miss them. You're excited to go back and see family and friends, and you try to ignore that thought in the back of your mind that you won't be with your roommate for a whole week. You try to convince yourself that you can get through this week without them. "Be strong," you say to yourself. "You can do this."

2. The feels

You thought you could get through this week without them, but then something comes up that reminds you of that time you guys saw that thing in the dining hall that made you laugh for an hour straight. Then it hits you. The feels. It is a combination of sadness, happiness, emptiness, and every other possible emotion. This is usually the point at which you break down and resort to the next couple of stages.

3. ALL CAPS TEXTING

CAPS JUST SEEM TO CONVEY YOUR EMOTIONS IN WAYS THAT LOWER CASE LETTERS JUST CAN'T. THEY ALSO SAY I MISS YOU AND I'M BORED SINCE WE CAN'T TALK 24/7 SO THIS IS MY WAY OF COMPENSATING. AND CAPS LOCK LETTERS GIVE JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF EMPHASIS. EMPHASIS!

4. Snapchat solace

Even if they're hundreds of miles away, they cannot escape your weirdness. There is no one at home to put up with your weird, hyper moods so you resort to Snapchat. It gives you solace to be able to see their snapchat-filtered face or send them a video of you singing their favorite song.

5. Acceptance

At the end of the day, you realize it will all be okay. Maybe it is a good thing to be apart so that you can truly appreciate having them around. You'll see them before you know it and the reunion is always something to look forward to.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
